The Class A CDL Backhoe Operator is responsible for safely operating backhoes and other heavy equipment in support of railroad construction, maintenance, material handling, and right-of-way projects. This position also operates Class A commercial motor vehicles to transport equipment, materials, and supplies to and from railroad job sites. The ideal candidate is an experienced heavy equipment operator with a strong commitment to safety, the ability to work around active railroad operations, and the flexibility to travel extensively for projects. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Safely operate backhoes, loaders, excavators, and other heavy equipment as assigned. Perform excavation, grading, ditching, trenching, loading, backfilling, and material-handling activities. Work around railroad tracks, crossings, rights-of-way, and other railroad infrastructure. Load, unload, move, and stage railroad materials and equipment. Operate Class A commercial vehicles to transport equipment, materials, and supplies. Safely load, secure, transport, and unload heavy equipment in accordance with company and DOT requirements. Perform daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections of commercial vehicles and equipment. Conduct routine equipment inspections and report mechanical or safety concerns immediately. Follow all railroad, company, OSHA, DOT, and site-specific safety requirements. Maintain required driver logs, inspection reports, and other documentation. Communicate effectively with supervisors, ground personnel, spotters, and other equipment operators. Maintain awareness of overhead and underground utilities and surrounding hazards. Assist with general railroad labor and job-site duties when equipment operation is not required. Maintain a clean and organized work area, truck, and assigned equipment. Attend required safety meetings, training, and railroad contractor orientation programs. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required. Acceptable driving record and ability to meet company and DOT driver qualification requirements. Previous experience operating a backhoe required. Heavy equipment operating experience in construction, railroad, excavation, or a related field preferred. Ability to safely operate equipment in confined areas and around railroad tracks and personnel. Ability to understand hand signals and communicate with ground personnel. Ability to perform basic equipment inspections and recognize potential mechanical problems. Must be able to pass all company, customer, and railroad-required screenings and qualifications. Must be willing and able to travel extensively and work out of town as projects require. Must be available to work varying schedules, including days, nights, weekends, and overtime when required. Must be dependable and able to work effectively with limited supervision. Preferred Qualifications Previous railroad construction or maintenance experience. Experience hauling heavy equipment using tractor-trailer and equipment trailers. Experience operating excavators, skid steers, loaders, dozers, or similar equipment. Knowledge of railroad right-of-way and job-site safety practices. Current railroad contractor safety qualifications or ability to obtain required qualifications. Physical Requirements This position requires the employee to: Frequently climb into and out of trucks and heavy equipment. Sit for extended periods while operating equipment or commercial vehicles. Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, push, and pull as required. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, dust, and uneven terrain. Work safely around moving equipment, railroad operations, noise, vibration, and other construction-related conditions. Wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE). The Class A CDL Backhoe Operator is expected to stop work when unsafe conditions exist, immediately report hazards or incidents, properly use required PPE, and comply with all company, customer, railroad, DOT, and applicable regulatory safety requirements.
