Job Title: Steel Erection Superintendent (QCI) Location: Madison Heights, VA Job Type: Full-Time Department: Steel Erection Reports To: Project Manager Position Summary We are seeking an experienced Steel Erection Superintendent (QCI) to lead and oversee structural steel erection activities on commercial and industrial construction projects. This individual will be responsible for supervising field operations, ensuring quality control, maintaining strict safety compliance, coordinating multiple crews, and delivering projects on schedule while meeting company and industry standards. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in structural steel erection, strong leadership skills, the ability to interpret structural drawings, and a thorough understanding of OSHA, AISC, and AWS standards. Key Responsibilities Plan, organize, and oversee daily structural steel erection activities. Supervise multiple foremen and field crews to ensure safe and efficient project execution. Coordinate manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontractors to meet project schedules. Perform quality control inspections (QCI) throughout all phases of steel erection. Ensure all work complies with project specifications, AISC, AWS, OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards. Read and interpret structural steel drawings, erection plans, shop drawings, and construction documents. Verify proper installation of structural beams, columns, bracing, connections, and miscellaneous steel. Coordinate crane operations, rigging activities, and heavy lifting procedures. Conduct daily equipment inspections and ensure equipment is safe and operational. Assist with crane setup, dismantling, maintenance coordination, and equipment inspections when required. Complete daily reports, inspection reports, deficiency reports, and quality documentation. Develop and maintain two-week look-ahead schedules and monitor project progress. Identify field issues and implement effective solutions to minimize delays. Coordinate with project managers, engineers, subcontractors, inspectors, and clients. Enforce company safety policies, hazard communication procedures, and emergency response plans. Conduct toolbox talks and safety meetings. Mentor, train, and evaluate foremen and field personnel. Monitor productivity, workmanship, and overall project performance. Required Qualifications 5+ years of experience supervising structural steel erection projects. Previous experience as a Steel Erection Superintendent, Structural Steel Superintendent, Ironworker Superintendent, or similar leadership role. Strong knowledge of structural steel erection methods and construction sequencing. Ability to read and interpret structural blueprints, shop drawings, and erection drawings. Experience supervising multiple crews on commercial or industrial construction projects. Thorough understanding of OSHA safety regulations and jobsite safety practices. Working knowledge of AISC and AWS standards. Experience coordinating crane operations, rigging, and heavy lifting activities. Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills. Ability to manage schedules, priorities, and multiple field activities simultaneously. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Willingness to travel as required. Preferred Qualifications Degree, technical certification, or equivalent construction management experience. Experience with heavy industrial, manufacturing, warehouse, energy, or large commercial projects. Knowledge of quality control inspection processes. Experience with project scheduling and look-ahead planning. NCCCO or other crane/rigging-related certifications are a plus. Physical Requirements Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and navigate active construction sites. Frequently lift up to 50 lbs. and occasionally lift or move more than 100 lbs. Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and work in physically demanding environments throughout the workday. Work Environment This position is based primarily on active construction sites and requires regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, elevated work areas, moving equipment, loud noise, vibration, dust, and other construction-related hazards.
