Organization Description Aldea - The People's Justice Center is a small non profit legal organization dedicated to expanding access to high-quality representation for immigrant children and families in the U.S. immigration system. Originating from grassroots efforts to end family detention in Berks County, Aldea has provided high-quality, culturally competent representation to immigrants and their families in Berks County and beyond. Our clients include long-term residents, mixed-status families, unaccompanied children, SIJ beneficiaries, and individuals in removal proceedings and detention. We combine legal courage with strategy and maintain a collaborative, supportive work environment grounded in community trust.
Role Description The Immigration Staff Attorney is a full-time, preferably on-site position based in Reading, PA. This role involves providing direct legal representation to immigrant children, families, and individuals in matters such as
• Asylum
• Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJ)
• Removal Defense
• Bond
• Habeas petitions
• Federal Litigation
• Select family court proceedings in Southeastern Pennsylvania
The attorney will maintain a full caseload of immigration matters, conduct legal research, draft filings, application packets with forms and evidence, legal briefs, and appear before immigration courts, administrative agencies, and, when needed, federal and state courts. Day-to-day responsibilities include meeting with clients, assessing legal needs, developing case strategies, and offering legal advice and advocacy that is trauma-informed and culturally responsive. The Immigration Staff Attorney will collaborate with colleagues, community partners, and support staff, and may assist with community education, outreach, and policy advocacy related to immigrant rights. The applicant will enjoy a collaborative work experience with strong mentorship and education on emerging issues.
Qualifications (Required)
• Juris Doctor degree and admission to at least one U.S. state bar.
• Strong legal research and writing skills
• Ability to manage a high-volume caseload with organization, kindness and care
• Willingness to appear in court, travel locally as needed, and participate in outreach and community education activities.
Qualifications (Strongly Preferred)
• Minimum of 2 years of immigration law experience as a lawyer or paralegal, familiarity with asylum and removal defense, SIJ status, bond, and habeas litigation
• Professional proficiency in a language commonly spoken by immigrant communities (Spanish, French, or Haitian Creole)
• Demonstrated trauma-informed practice
• Ability to learn quickly and adapt to evolving legal environments
• Demonstrated commitment to social justice, immigrant rights, and working with vulnerable or marginalized communities.
• Ability to manage a demanding caseload, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively in a small, mission-driven team environment.
Salary
Starting at $63,000 including health benefits, commensurate with experience.
