Summer Internship – Garage Service Technician
12-week paid internship | Fredericksburg, PA | In-person
Program Overview
The Garage Service Technician Summer Internship, is a hands-on opportunity designed for students interested in diesel mechanics, automotive technology, or heavy equipment maintenance. This internship provides real-world experience working alongside experienced technicians in a fast-paced fleet maintenance environment.
As a Garage Service Technician Intern, you’ll support preventative maintenance and basic repair activities on tractor and trailer equipment while gaining exposure to diagnostic procedures, inspections, repair processes, safety standards, and daily shop operations. This program is designed to help interns build foundational mechanical skills and gain practical industry experience in transportation and fleet maintenance.
What You’ll Experience
• Assist technicians with preventative maintenance and repairs on tractors and trailers
• Support inspections, troubleshooting, and basic diagnostic procedures on fleet equipment, forklifts, refer trailers.
• Learn proper use of hand tools, shop equipment, and safety procedures
• Observe and assist Pa state inspections component replacements, pm services, basic wiring repairs, along with electronic diagnostics on Cummins, Detroit, Mack. Thermo King.
• Help maintain accurate work orders and repair documentation
• Support shop organization, housekeeping, and safe work practices
• Gain exposure to transportation operations and fleet maintenance processes
• Communicate equipment concerns or unsafe conditions to leadership
• Perform additional duties and support projects as assigned
Qualifications
• High school diploma or currently enrolled in a technical or vocational program preferred
• Interest in diesel mechanics, automotive technology, or heavy equipment maintenance
• Basic mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn in a hands-on environment
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to workplace safety
• Valid driver’s license preferred
• Basic computer knowledge preferred
Skills & Physical Requirements
• Basic understanding of hand tools and mechanical equipment
• Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills
• Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to workplace safety
• Comfortable working in a hands-on, fast-paced shop environment
• Capable of standing, walking, bending, crouching, kneeling, and performing physical tasks throughout the shift
• Able to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds
• Willingness to work around moving mechanical parts, noise, and varying temperatures
• Basic computer knowledge preferred
Work Environment
This position operates primarily in a fleet maintenance shop environment. Interns may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, vibration, wet or humid conditions, and elevated noise levels. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times while working in designated areas.
