Job Responsibilities Diagnoses, repairs or replaces parts as necessary to maintain all automotive gasoline engines, transmissions, brakes, exhaust systems, cylinder heads, valves, timing belts, cooling systems. Performs wiring repairs, brake jobs, and tune ups when required on vehicles. Diagnoses the repairs or replacement of parts on all diesel powered equipment assigned to South Carolina Department of Transportation. Performs maintenance and repairs on diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, hydraulic motors, pumps, cylinders, mowing equipment, tractors, motor graders, rollers and AMZ machines. Performs preventive maintenance as required. Performs electric welding or gas welding and fabrication as needed for repairs on various equipment and for making modifications to equipment to improve the production of utilizations. Uses computerized test equipment to diagnose, repair or replace parts as necessary on gasoline and diesel vehicles. Operates and performs testing with new generation start tester and monitor testing equipment in order to diagnose problems with various on board computer systems. Performs work on electrical system repair or replacement of alternators, starters, DMI and equipment exterior lighting. Performs maintenance and repairs on small engines such as lawn mowers, chain saws, pole saws, edgers, string trimmers, etc. Sharpens chains for chain saws and pole saws. Maintains a safe and clean shop work area and ensure all work is done within Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Department of Health and Environmental Control compliance. Repairs vehicles during service calls that require repair before movement and assists in shop operations during after hour emergencies and inclement weather operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum and Additional Requirements One and one-half (1.5) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulate objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. grasping. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
