General Definition of Work:
Performing and assisting the Chief Finance Officer (CFO) with accounting duties, which may include budgeting and payroll functions, preparing financial reports, assisting other offices as required, and performing other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions:
• Enters accounts payable into the current accounting system, ensuring proper general ledger coding, verifying totals, verifying checks for mailing, and preparing requests for federal reimbursement.
• Prepares and records local deposits.
• Assists with training and support of school bookkeepers.
• Prepares and enters journal and budget entries into the current accounting system, providing documentation to the county as needed.
• Communicates with the county finance office on vendor issues, such as W9s, remittance addresses, and 1099s.
• Assists with the responsibilities of the Payroll Specialist as needed. Assumes the payroll responsibilities as necessary in their absence.
• Maintains fixed asset listing.
• Serves as backup for preparing grant reimbursements.
• Assists with verifying the County general ledger detail to the School general ledger detail in payroll accounts lines.  Assists with investigating differences in the two reports.
• Maintains lease schedule.
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting and speaking or hearing and occasionally requires standing, walking and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic)
Education and Job Experience:
General knowledge of standard office practices,  equipment and office assistance techniques; general knowledge of business English, spelling and arithmetic; general knowledge of school and departmental programs and policies and terminology; ability to read and understand moderately detailed policies, procedures and job related materials; ability to make mathematical calculations; ability to operate a variety of office and computer equipment and produce documents and correspondence; ability to follow oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, students, parents and the general public.  An associate’s degree in accounting or equivalent work experience, including knowledge of general ledger, accounts payable, and payroll, is preferred.  Familiarity with the Virginia Department of Education account code structure and the federal grant process.
