What We’re Looking For:
Michael Baker International is seeking a Traffic Operations Field Support Specialist in Lynchburg, VA!  In this role, you’ll support the Traffic Engineering Section by conducting field evaluations of work zones, assisting with traffic shifts, and providing practical guidance on temporary traffic control for construction and maintenance activities. You’ll review field conditions, complete safety checklists, and recommend improvements to ensure compliance with the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual, while partnering with inspectors and construction teams during active operations. You’ll also assist with preconstruction reviews, data collection, detour assessments, and basic plan reviews—gaining valuable experience while helping enhance safety and efficiency across the district.
What You’ll Do:
Conduct field reviews of construction, maintenance, and land-use work zones.
Complete work zone safety checklists and document field conditions with photographs and video.
Provide technical feedback to bring work zones into compliance with the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual.
Participate in traffic switches and support inspectors and project staff during transitions between construction phases.
Attend construction meetings as needed to provide input on work zone safety and traffic operations.
Perform preconstruction field reviews, signage inventories, and assessments of roadway and site conditions.
Evaluate proposed detour routes for safety and operational viability
What You Need to Succeed:
High School Diploma or GED required
Experience in roadway construction, roadway maintenance, or traffic engineering.
Knowledge of temporary traffic control practices and the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual.
Ability to read and interpret traffic control plans and construction documents.
Strong communication and field documentation skills.
Intermediate or Advanced Work Zone Certification preferred.
Valid driver's license
COMPENSATION 
The approximate compensation range for this position is $32/hr - $45/hr. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.  Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
