Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
The Phlebotomist plays a key role in safely collecting, processing, and preparing specimens while supporting efficient laboratory workflow. This role involves performing venipunctures and other specimen collections, maintaining accurate records, troubleshooting routine issues, assisting with training, and making recommendations to improve work processes in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Responsibilities
• Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care.
• Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
• Explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients to ensure comfort and understanding.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is complete and accurate.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders to maintain specimen integrity.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as needed to support a safe and compliant work area.
• Update and maintain accurate patient information in the appropriate systems or records.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport, following all protocols to maintain appropriate temperature and handling conditions.
• Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes according to protocol.
• Follow detailed procedures and protocols for specimen handling and transport to preserve the quality and integrity of specimens.
• Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure proper test selection and specimen requirements.
• Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy appropriate inquiries, following applicable procedures.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all relevant safety and regulatory requirements.
• Assist with troubleshooting routine issues in specimen collection and processing and make workflow recommendations to improve efficiency.
• Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and best practices to colleagues as needed.
Essential Skills
• Proven experience performing blood draws and venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, with a minimum of 6 months of work experience.
• Demonstrated proficiency in using straight needles and butterfly needles for blood collection.
• Strong skills in specimen collection, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, following established procedures.
• Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens in alignment with test requirements.
• Experience with specimen processing and handling to maintain specimen integrity and quality.
• Ability to read, understand, and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory requisitions.
• Strong attention to detail when matching requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying patient and test information.
• Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and general laboratory safety standards.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
• Effective customer service and communication skills to interact with patients and respond to inquiries professionally.
• Ability to work confidently with patients of all age groups, including pediatrics, for blood draws and specimen collection.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 0–2 years of overall relevant experience in a clinical or laboratory environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states.
• Experience working in a high-volume, fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Comfort and skill in performing pediatric blood draws and working with a diverse patient population.
• Familiarity with laboratory information systems and electronic records for updating patient information and retrieving results.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple specimens and tasks simultaneously.
• Ability to support training and share best practices with team members to enhance workflow and quality.
Work Environment
This role is based in a clinical laboratory or hospital setting that operates at a fast pace and requires strict adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, specimen tubes, and collection containers, as well as computer systems and Microsoft Office applications for documentation and communication. The position involves frequent interaction with patients of all ages, healthcare providers, and laboratory staff, as well as regular handling, labeling, and processing of biological specimens. The work environment emphasizes cleanliness, decontamination procedures, and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations to ensure a safe and professional setting.

Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Seaford, DE.
Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.
