Reports to: Division Coordinator/Principal or designee
General Definition of Work: To assist the school division in providing differentiated educational opportunities designed to meet the unique needs of limited English proficient (LEP) students. To provide leadership and on-going staff development as an English Learners (EL) specialist in the schools. To assist classroom teachers and administrators in creating positive learning environments for LEP students. To offer services that reflect current research and best practices in EL education to increase English language proficiency.
Essential Functions:
A. Professional Performance
• To comply with school and school board policies and regulations
• To demonstrate skills in elementary and secondary teaching methods and student assessment for English Learners
• To demonstrate knowledge of the socio-cultural variables in the instructional setting
• To work cooperatively with school staff members
• To work collaboratively with classroom teachers who seek assistance in providing appropriate curricula for LEP students
• To plan and implement communication procedures that help parents and classroom teachers become knowledgeable about the EL program
• To demonstrate command of Standard English, both written and spoken
• To complete required records and reports promptly and accurately
• To maintain an organized and safe environment for students
• To performs related duties as assigned
B. Instrucitonal Performance
1. Interpersonal Relations:
• To practice and promote positive interaction with and among EL students and staff
• To relate appropriately to parents and other community representatives
• To demonstrate enthusiasm for learning
• Subject Matter:
• To assist with the selection of appropriate teaching methods and materials for LEP students
• To demonstrate knowledge of another language and its structure
• To demonstrate knowledge of general linguistics and English linguistics
• To demonstrate skills in the teaching of reading
• Planning/Materials:
• To utilize a variety of appropriate materials and resources
• To demonstrate resourcefulness and the ability to use community resources
• To assume responsibility for the care of materials, equipment and facilities
• Techniques/Delivery:
• To utilize appropriate and varied teaching techniques and learning activities
• To demonstrate the ability to adjust presentation of subject content to students’ needs and interests
• To maintain an effective system of monitoring student participation and progress
• To plan and implement communication procedures designed to inform parents about their child’s performance
• Assessment:
• To assess LEP students for program eligibility
• To conduct ongoing evaluations of students participating in EL services
• To monitor progress of students in all academic areas
• Other duties as apparent or assigned
License/Endorsements : Valid state certification with an endorsement in English as a Second Language
Contract Period: 10 months
