The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State University College of Medicine is seeking a PhD, MD or MD/PhD Director of Cytogenetics at the Assistant/Associate/Professor level to establish a new cytogenetics laboratory. Candidates for this position must be certified or eligible for board certification in clinical cytogenetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics or by the American Board of Pathology in molecular genetic pathology. Additionally, certification/eligibility in molecular genetics is desirable.
The individual will be responsible for planning and executing the establishment of a new cytogenetics facility at Hershey Medical Center. This is a unique opportunity for the individual with experience and vision to set up the laboratory and deliver needed services. Following establishment of the lab the Director, with appropriate support, will include meeting requirements for certification by regulatory agencies (CLIA, CAP), developing and maintaining standard operating procedure manuals, and quality control practices. The Director will also ensure supervision of cytogenetics technical staff in the technical performance of proficiency testing programs as required by the regulatory agencies of CGI (CLIA, CAP). The candidate must have demonstrated skills in pre-, post, and analytical clinical laboratory operations, clinical laboratory budget development and cost management and experience to troubleshoot technical problems. The director will be primarily responsible for analysis and interpretation of results, preparation and reviewing of final test reports, and reporting of results on oncological, prenatal, and postnatal specimens. The candidate will also support the development and validation of in-house FISH -based assays for applications in oncology and other areas. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with others are essential.
Evidence of scholarly activity is highly desirable and candidates with research interests are encouraged to apply. Support and opportunities exist for pursuit of research interests and there are extensive opportunities for collaborations within the College of Medicine and its various Institutes, as well as the Penn State Cancer Institute.
Appointment will be at a rank commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments.
