The Cancer Foundation is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to alleviating the financial burden of cancer for individuals and families across 25 counties in Northeast Georgia. Through our Financial Assistance and Nutritional Assistance programs, we provide practical, timely support to people navigating the costs and disruptions of cancer treatment.
Position Summary
The Accounting Manager leads the organization’s accounting function in a lean, hands-on nonprofit environment. This role is responsible for full-cycle accounting, financial reporting, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, donation and gift processing, grant and restricted fund tracking, audit preparation, internal controls, and high-volume financial assistance disbursements.
This is not a traditional back-office role. The Accounting Manager helps ensure funds move accurately and on time to support both organizational operations and people facing cancer. Success in this role requires strong accounting judgment, attention to detail, comfort managing time-sensitive transactions, and commitment to mission-driven service.
Key Responsibilities
• Manage full-cycle accounting, including general ledger, journal entries, month-end close, reconciliations, and financial records maintenance
• Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and internal reports for leadership, the Board, auditors, and grantors
• Oversee accounts payable, vendor payments, employee expense review, deposit activity, and accounts receivable support
• Process payroll and maintain payroll-related reconciliations and documentation
• Receive, record, and reconcile donations, grants, online gifts, donor-advised fund contributions, workplace giving, and other revenue
• Track restricted and unrestricted funds, grant income and expenses, and donor designations for compliance and reporting accuracy
• Process a high volume of financial assistance payments with accuracy, timeliness, and complete supporting documentation
• Verify approvals, invoices, payee details, and supporting records before releasing payments
• Coordinate with program staff to resolve payment issues, prevent delays, and track disbursements to completion
• Investigate and resolve rejected payments, duplicate payments, invoice discrepancies, and vendor issues
• Maintain strong internal controls, audit-ready files, and accurate supporting schedules
• Coordinate annual audit preparation and work directly with the Foundation’s CPA firm and external auditors
• Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow monitoring, and budget-to-actual reporting
• Partner with development staff to reconcile gifts and maintain consistency between accounting and donor systems
• Help improve accounting workflows, documentation practices, and financial procedures over time
What Success Looks Like
In the first year, the Accounting Manager will:
• Maintain accurate weekly and monthly accounting processes and reconciliations
• Ensure dependable payroll, accounts payable, donation reconciliation, and financial assistance workflows
• Support a clean, well-prepared annual audit
• Deliver clear and timely financial reporting for leadership and the Board
• Strengthen compliance with donor intent, grant restrictions, and internal controls
• Identify practical process improvements that increase efficiency and accuracy
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience
• 5+ years of accounting experience, including full-cycle accounting responsibilities
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting
• Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, reconciliations, and month-end/year-end close
• Experience with donation processing, gift reconciliation, and restricted fund or grant tracking
• Ability to work independently in a lean environment with strong organization and follow-through
• Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Office 365, especially Excel
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills
• High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional judgment

Preferred Qualifications
• Nonprofit accounting experience
• Experience with grant reporting, donor-restricted funds, and in-kind support
• Experience supporting external audits and Board financial reporting
• Experience with systems such as Ramp, Gusto, Salesforce, Bloomerang, or Kindful
• Experience in healthcare, human services, or another mission-driven nonprofit setting
• Experience managing high-volume payment operations and improving accounting workflows

Work Environment
This role is primarily on-site in Athens, Georgia, with occasional remote flexibility as approved. Some evening or weekend hours may be needed for audits, month-end close, special projects, or other time-sensitive needs.
