What We Look For In a Middle School Reading Tutor
• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of reading comprehension strategies, literary analysis, informational text structures, vocabulary development, text evidence citation, author purpose and point of view, figurative language, and critical reading skills. Ability to explain inference, theme identification, and text comparison while preparing middle school students for grade-level reading proficiency and standardized assessment success.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching close reading, evidence-based responses, and critical analysis of fiction and nonfiction texts. Guides students through identifying themes across texts, analyzing character development, evaluating argument strength in informational texts, and citing textual evidence in written responses. Emphasizes developing independent reading strategies and connects reading skills to academic success across English, social studies, and science.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with middle school reading standards for grades six through eight and common challenges such as inferencing from complex texts, analyzing author craft, and reading stamina for longer works. Adapts instruction using diverse text selections, annotation strategies, and graphic organizers to support middle school readers from struggling to advanced levels building comprehension and analytical skills.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
