What We Look For In a Functions Tutor
• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of function notation, domain and range, linear functions, quadratic functions, polynomial functions, rational functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, function composition, inverses, and transformations. Ability to explain vertical line test, piecewise functions, and end behavior analysis while preparing students for precalculus and advanced algebra coursework.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at breaking down function evaluation, graphing techniques, and transformation rules including shifts, reflections, and stretches. Guides students through analyzing function behavior from equations and graphs, finding intercepts and asymptotes, and solving function equations algebraically. Emphasizes recognizing function families visually and connects functions to real-world modeling in science and economics.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with functions curricula at the high school and early college level, and common challenges such as distinguishing function types, applying transformation rules correctly, and understanding composition and inverse notation. Adapts instruction using graphing technology, side-by-side visual comparisons, and scaffolded practice to support students building foundational skills for calculus readiness.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
