Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Facilities Services, the Carpenter performs skilled carpentry work across campus facilities. This includes classrooms, residences, dining facilities, laboratories, athletic facilities, and other school-owned properties. The role requires the ability to construct, repair, and maintain structural and finish elements in accordance with applicable trade standards and regulatory requirements. The Carpenter supports a safe, functional, and well-maintained campus environment and may be required to respond to emergency situations.
Responsibilities
The primary focus of the Carpenter position is to provide carpentry support and service across all areas of the Hill School campus.
• Perform all aspects of carpentry work including repairs, modifications, and new construction such as furniture, walls, cabinetry, kitchens, windows, and related building components.
• Perform routine preventative maintenance on tools, equipment, and building systems associated with carpentry work.
• Maintain and repair campus lock systems.
• Perform landscape-related construction projects as needed.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of maintenance areas, mechanical rooms, and job sites.
• Assist with maintenance and safe operation of carpentry vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• Read and interpret complex blueprints, sketches, and schematics.
• Manage and complete work orders in a timely and professional manner.
• Estimate time and materials for projects while maintaining quality control standards.
• Respond to emergency maintenance calls as needed.
• Assist other Facilities team members with general maintenance duties.
• Perform all other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications
• 7–10 years of experience as a Carpenter or in a related field.
• Ability to repair and replace locks.
• Ability to read and comprehend instructions and communicate effectively.
• Basic computer skills including email.
• Ability to read basic wiring diagrams.
• Ability to perform basic math and problem solving.
• Valid Pennsylvania driver's license.
Physical Requirements
This position requires strength and dexterity necessary to perform all essential tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds. Duties involve stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling, and working in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Work includes operating power tools, working from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms up to 30 feet high, and handling heavy or awkward equipment. Employees may be exposed to extreme temperatures, damp conditions, dust, poor lighting, excessive noise, strong cleaning solvents, electrical hazards, and moving machinery. Vision sufficient to distinguish color differences is required, as is the ability to wear a respirator when necessary. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may require nonstandard hours. Reasonable accommodation may be considered if the essential functions of the role can be performed.
