Job Responsibilities The Benefits Counselor serves as the University’s primary counselor and subject matter resource for employee insurance and retirement benefits. Provides comprehensive consultation to employees, retirees, and beneficiaries regarding enrollment, eligibility, processing, calculation, and explanation of insurance and retirement benefits. Exercises independent judgment in resolving complex benefit issues while ensuring compliance with applicable Federal, State, and University policies and regulations.
Minimum and Additional Requirements A bachelor's degree and professional experience in insurance or retirement programs is required. PHR desired. Must have strong skills in providing excellent customer service and demonstrate strong ethics. A valid driver's license and safe driving history are required.
Preferred Qualifications Experience working in higher education or state government and direct experience with South Carolina state benefits (PEBA) strongly preferred.
Additional Comments Must have strong working knowledge of human resources including benefits administration, technology, and interpreting applicable policies and employment laws including the Affordable Care Act. Ability to explain complex benefits information in a clear and approachable manner. Excellent customer service with strong communication and interpersonal skills, computer, and organizational skills. Must be team oriented with attention to detail, confidentiality, and possess the ability to meet deadlines.
