What We Look For In a Drawing Tutor
• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of drawing fundamentals including line quality, shading and value, perspective (one-point, two-point, three-point), proportion, composition, figure drawing, still life, and various media including graphite, charcoal, ink, and colored pencil. Ability to explain gesture drawing, contour drawing, and tonal rendering while preparing students for art portfolios, AP Studio Art, and art school admission.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching observational drawing skills, compositional design, and media techniques. Guides students through developing hand-eye coordination, constructing accurate proportions, applying perspective systems, rendering light and shadow, and developing a personal artistic voice. Emphasizes seeing like an artist through careful observation and connects drawing to visual communication, design careers, and creative expression across artistic disciplines.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with drawing curricula and common challenges such as overcoming symbolic drawing habits, understanding perspective foreshortening, and achieving consistent tonal values. Adapts instruction using guided exercises, master drawing analysis, and progressive skill-building projects to support students from complete beginners through advanced artists developing portfolios for art school, AP Studio Art, or personal creative growth.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
