JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the organization, development and operation of an outdoor, summer, youth recreation program including the direct supervision of children in both active and passive recreational activities. The program operates five (5) hours a day, Monday through Friday for seven weeks during the months of June and July. An employee in this position must be able to attend one week of orientation prior to the start of the program and attend all seven weeks of the program. Time off, other than for illness or family emergency, is not permitted. An employee in this position is required to continually participate in and lead groups and individuals in various recreational activities in an outdoor park setting during all types of weather conditions. Employees must be able to work as part of a team and be able to verbally communicate, in a professional manner, with colleagues, supervisors, participants and parents. Employees are provided with staff shirts that must be worn during all working hours. Work is performed under the direction of the Playground Supervisor, Recreation Program Coordinator and the Director of Parks and Recreation. LEVEL OF SUPERVISION/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Employee must be able to work cohesively as part of a team exercising sound judgement in day-to-day interactions with program participants, their parents, colleagues and supervisors. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (includes but is not limited to the following): · Organize and lead groups and individuals in various recreational and educational activities including but not limited to sports, craft projects, games and the performing arts. · Explain and enforce program regulations including safety precautions. · Explain and enforce rules and specific techniques of the activity. · Demonstrate procedures, materials, equipment and supplies necessary for the activity or program. · Arrange and direct tournaments, leagues, demonstrations, shows and other special events. · Develop programs and activities that are appropriate for all participant ages and abilities. · Ensure proper use of equipment including the return of portable equipment to its storage location. · Maintain discipline and safety on play equipment and throughout the duration of the program. · Complete required reports including but not limited to attendance reports, safety inspections, medical reports and accident reports. · Ability to create a weekly newsletter using Microsoft Office Suite and electronically transmit the newsletter to the Playground Supervisor. · All other duties as may be assigned by the Playground Supervisor, Recreation Program Coordinator or the Director of Parks and Recreation. Must be at least eighteen (18) years old. Experience supervising children in a group setting is preferred. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must have excellent listening and verbal communication skills. Must speak in a clear and professional manner, using the normal rules of English grammar to provide oral direction to program participants and oral responses to their parents. Bi-lingual English/Spanish is helpful/preferred. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed and, at times, complex written and oral instructions. Ability to understand, remember and carry-out multi-step oral and written directions. Must be able to exercise sound independent judgement concerning when it is necessary to ask for guidance or assistance from higher level Township personnel. CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS: Certification in Standard First Aid and Adult CPR is required prior to the start of the Summer Playground Program. The Township will arrange for this training. COMPUTER OPERATIONS: Must have demonstrated proficiency with personal computers and common software including Microsoft Outlook (calendar and e-mail), Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher) and the ability to use the internet.
