The enrollee shall not author articles for publication as a federal employee, nor coordinate scientific research between the Government and private industry. The enrollee shall not present themselves as a Government employee or Government representative at meetings both foreign and domestic or when coordinating federal agencies? areas of research. The enrollee shall not make decisions on federally based research on behalf of Government policy makers, and the enrollee shall not supervise any Government employees.

Qualifications:
Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience in poultry husbandry and breeding. OR BA/BS Degree in Poultry Science, Animal Science or Medical Technology
• The candidate is required to have a minimum of 20 years' experience in performing artificial insemination, particularly with the extraction of semen from roosters. The enrollee must be able to perform this task independently with high success.
• Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel
Duties:
The enrollee will assist with the 2026 annual flock repopulation of USNPRC's defined genetics chicken breeding flock. Tasks will include artificial insemination, sorting chickens, sorting eggs, routine animal husbandry and facility upkeep, and may include euthanasia of chickens. The purpose of the work is to develop, maintain, and supply research animals from specialized lines of chickens kept in a specific pathogen-free environment. The work involves performance or consultations to the full range of routine tests, procedures, and activities. The tasks directly impact all of the animal-related research designed by the principal investigators at the laboratory. The enrollee shall not sign federal documents, authorize the use of federal funds, nor initiate or conduct federally funded research projects. The enrollee shall not author articles for publication as a federal employee, nor coordinate scientific research between the Government and private industry. The enrollee shall not present themselves as a Government employee or Government representative at meetings both foreign and domestic or when coordinating federal agencies? areas of research. • Flock repopulation. Performs artificial insemination, including extraction of semen from roosters and insemination of hens. Assists with plans specifying the number of breeding chickens of each type to be maintained, where they are to be housed, and when they are to be hatched. Provides eggs and chicks sufficient for laboratory research needs and flock repopulations without excessive surplus. 60%
• Hatchery management. Assists with processing of pedigree eggs in the hatchery, ensuring that eggs and chicks are properly sorted and identified. 15%
• Pedigree records. Advises and assists in the collection and recording of data to ensure an accurate and permanent pedigree record of breeder chickens in a suitable computer format. Reviews and evaluates this data to verify accuracy and completeness. 15%
• Plans and procedures. Participates in the development of procedures for maintaining the specific pathogen-free status of poultry on the breeder farm and the quarantine of experimental poultry on the experimental farm. participates in the design and development of sound poultry flock management programs that are specific to the needs of the research scientists. Develops chronological and logistical plans for the pedigree mating, hatching, and rearing of the chickens and duck flocks. Plans and supervises the execution of specific mating required by individual researchers. 5%
• Testing. Advises on testing of poultry flocks to ensure their genetic integrity and specific pathogen-free status. Prepares schedules for sample collection and storage, directs the collection of blood samples, the prompt distribution of samples for testing, and assembles test results. Provides immediate notification of unwanted infections. 5%

• Travel Requirements: Preferred candidate may need to travel to Athens, GA for portions of the work.
• Overnight travel: Candidate may need to travel to Athens, GA and stay overnight Monday through Friday.
• Air travel anticipated: Air travel may be necessary on Monday and Fridays.
• Rental cars: There may be occasional travel to Athens, GA with rental car required for transportation from Atlanta airport.
• Health and Safety Considerations: Training is required with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
• Physical requirements: The candidate may be involved in assisting management of the breeding flock and experimental chickens. Moderate to heavy physical exertion may be required to move equipment and carcasses (50 to 60 pounds). Stooping, bending, reaching, and active walking required. The ability to move quickly around unrestrained, often frightened, unpredictable and ill-natured animals is also required. Actual handling of birds is involved in artificial insemination, sample collection, and pedigree hatching of chicks.
