About The College/Unit/Department
Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant provides integrated research, education and extension programs that foster the responsible use of Georgia’s coastal resources by individuals, decision-makers and management agencies.
Our program is managed through a federal-state partnership between the University of Georgia (UGA) and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) National Sea Grant College Program, a national network of 34 Sea Grant programs located in coastal and Great Lakes states and territories.
Mission and Focus AreasMarine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant’s mission is to improve the environmental, social and economic health of the Georgia coast through research, education and extension.
Every four years, our program develops a long-range strategic plan that describes our goals and priorities for the coming years. To create this plan, we utilize an inclusive, multi-step process that incorporates fresh input from a diverse constituency.

Position Summary
The Seafood Outreach Internship provides hands-on opportunities to learn about local food systems and the seafood supply chain. Its purpose is also to apply knowledge and skills to support the mission of Georgia Sea Grant in educating local communities and businesses about sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, seafood products and seafood safety.
The Seafood Outreach Internship is designed to provide hands-on learning opportunities and practical experience in the disciplines of food systems, the seafood industry, and education and outreach.
The seafood program at Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant is dedicated to supporting the Georgia Seafood industry, by increasing interest in use of seafood products. The student will gain experience in community interaction, communication, collaborative planning and gathering perspectives from different stakeholders. Through their learning experiences, the intern will tap into creativity to develop new outreach materials that will further Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant’s strategic goals under the Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture focus area. Objectives
• Become familiar with Georgia fisheries and aquaculture
• Expand knowledge about seafood nutrition, safety and consumer education
• Learn about the coastal environment and the interplay of ecology and the seafood
• Apply knowledge to create outreach materials and participate in outreach activities
• Organize a capstone event about local aquaculture

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification In Position
• Majoring in nutrition, food science, fisheries or related studies
• Experience using MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and email
• Valid state driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies
• Function as a team member of the Marine Extension and Georgia Sea Grant faculty, staff, and intern team
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Comfortable interacting with the public of different age groups and backgrounds
• Has interest in the connections between ecosystems, food and public health
• At least 18 years of age
• Intern should be currently enrolled in accredited college/university
• Completion of internship application and standard background check
• United States citizen or possess a valid U.S. work visa
• Physical ability to work outdoors in summer heat and lift objects up to 50 lbs
