Diesel Mechanic
Overall Purpose
The job of Diesel Mechanic is done for the purpose/s of providing mechanic services with specific responsibility for identifying repair and/or replacement needs; performing repairs and preventive maintenance; ensuring completion of repairs in accordance with trade standards; assisting other mechanics and ensuring that tools and materials are available at job site.

Essential Functions
• Attends a variety of meetings (unit in-service, safety meetings, training schools, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.
• Coordinates with a variety of community and district stakeholders (administration, bus drivers, other trades, etc.) for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently.
• Diagnoses equipment malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or replacements.
• Inspects assigned equipment (brake system, oil levels, coolant, tire pressure, general conditions, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the vehicle is in a safe operating condition.
• Maintains records (repairs, costs, vehicle warranties, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and meeting regulatory requirements.
• Maintains tools, equipment, and/or shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability of tools and equipment, and safety within the workspace.
• Performs post repair inspections, including road tests for the purpose of ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and complying with mandated guidelines.
• Prepares written materials (repair and maintenance logs, parts lists, warranty claims, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and meeting mandated requirements.
• Repairs gasoline and diesel powered buses, electrical and mechanical systems in the shop area and at break-down location (school buses, grounds equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of equipment in safe operating condition.
• Transports tools, equipment, and/or supplies for the purpose of providing on-site repairs.

Required to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; handling hazardous materials; operating equipment used in vehicle repair and maintenance; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: safety practices and procedures; pertinent codes, policies, regulations, and/or laws; diesel and electrical systems; and trends in automotive diagnosis and repair.

Required to schedule activities and/or meetings; gather and/or collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a wide variety of types of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is significant. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: displaying mechanical aptitude; adapting to changing work priorities; being attentive to detail; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; and setting priorities.
Requirements
High school diploma or GED equivalent
Minimum one (1) year experience in repair of gasoline and diesel engines or equivalent knowledge/training
Must possess or obtain Georgia Commercial Driver’s License
Physical Requirements
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 55% walking, and 40% standing.
