The UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island (UGAMI) is a world-renowned field destination that supports research and education in coastal ecosystems. The Marine Institute is located on Sapelo Island, GA, accessible only via ferry or boat.

M-F 8:30-5:00. Transportation to island is by ferry in Meridian that leaves on time at 8:30 and has one midday run and a 4:30 departure from Sapelo. If you miss the ferry, you will miss a day of work.

Note: this position is NOT in Athens , but located on the coast of Georgia at Sapelo Island . You must take a ferry (paid by UGAMI) every day to work.

Duties/Responsibilities
Duties/Responsibilities
• Performs general cleaning, sanitizing and dusting dormitories, visitor quarters, offices, laboratories, classrooms, all UGAMI campus.
• Sweeps, mops, scrub floors and stairways; dust and clean furniture, window blinds, baseboards, picture frames; wash windows, walls, trash cans, doors, outside walks/porches, and vehicles; occasionally works from a ladder.
• Cleans all restrooms and replenishes supplies; cleans and polishes drinking fountains.
• Cleans floors using broom, vacuum, and mop.
• Moves office and residence hall furniture and equipment.
• Replaces light bulbs, fire alarm batteries and occasionally unstops lavatories.
• Reports damaged structures and equipment.
Percentage of time 85 Duties/Responsibilities
• Assists in food preparation for various groups. Prepares a wide variety of meals and operates standard cooking equipment such as mixing machines, steam cookers, toaster, food choppers, refrigerators, baking ovens, and gas stove.
• Sets up and takes down tables and chairs for meetings and/or events.
• Cleans during food preparation and after meal is over, amid regular working hours.
• Maintains ServSafe food handler certification.
• Performs related work as needed.
Percentage of time 10 Duties/Responsibilities
Special Projects – All UGAMI employees are expected to take on additional duties as needed. Special projects may range from helping to prepare for important visitors, preparing for special weather events, or taking on other non-listed cleaning duties and/or landscaping to support island wide events.

Performs manual work in various ways: cleaning, meal preparation, and other related duties. Cleaning duties include classrooms, residence halls, guest rooms, lab rooms, and offices. Work involves the performance of cleaning in an assigned building or building area. A small percentage of time will be assisting in meal preparation and clean-up for various visiting groups who may have multiple dietary restrictions. The individual works under close supervision and follows well established routines and procedures, following instructions well.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification In Position
• One year industrial, custodial, food service, or related experience is desired.
• ServSafe certification will be obtained once hired and paid for by UGAMI.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies
• Squat, stoop, bend at the waist and knees; climb stairs, ladders and bunk beds; lift and/or move items weighing up to 40lbs; work with arms and hands overhead for a period.
• Some knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment.
• Exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of building surfaces.
• Work several hours at manual tasks, often performing repetitive tasks.
• Knowledge of materials, methods, equipment, and health hazards for food preparation on a large scale.
• Understand and follow written and/or oral instructions concerning cleaning or food services.
Physical Demands
Standing or steady movement for serval hours. Performing repetitive tasks. Climbing ladders or bunk beds. Lifting and moving items up to 40lbs. Occasionally working in summer heat or winter cold weather, at times with biting insects. Driving campus vehicles and golf carts as needed.
