I am mechanical engineer within the Global Advanced Engineering department at Carpenter Technology Corporation. I started my career as a process engineer in the heat treat department. I have mentored several interns/co-ops in my time as a process engineer. I am passionate about engineering, machine design, new technology, project engineering, and helping students get real world experience within Carpenter.What Do We Do?Business Unit: Global Advanced EngineeringGlobal Advanced Engineering (GAE) supports the operations at Carpenter Technology Corporation by purchasing and installing new equipment, modifying existing pieces of machinery to improve production or reliability, installing new safety systems to protect operators, and generally assisting with increasing capacity, efficiency, and safety throughout the mill.Ongoing ProjectsAssist engineer to specify, purchase, and install new equipmentReverse engineering existing equipment and parts into 3D modelsDesigning modifications to existing equipmentYour Role as an InternYou will be a part of a dynamic team, supporting the following tasks:Under the general direction of the Project Engineer, interns will assist and participate in projects from initial design to final construction phase.The intern will learn to apply mechanical engineering principles to the design, analysis, validation, and support of machines/equipment.Some specifics tasks include:Work closely with engineers as well as manufacturing plant personnel to perform miscellaneous fieldwork, create and update CAD drawings, design and specify new equipment and modifications to existing equipment, and assist with construction of equipment.Address Environmental Health and Safety issues and processesLearn to estimate project costsLearn how to, and prepare information for the installation and/or modification of process equipmentAssist in start-up new and modified process equipmentProduce operator and maintenance manuals and final drawingsLearn practical mechanical engineering for plant systems such as HVAC, chemical, storage and material handling, coOur Value Proposition - This position will allow you to develop and build expertise in the following core skills:Adaptability – You will track, prioritize, and drive multiple concurrent projects to success, while working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.Problem Solving – Develop your critical thinking and analytical skills to assess safety in the manufacturing environment, recommend solutions or next steps, and identify best practices to achieve the value of ZERO injuries. Active Learner – Ability and appetite to learn quickly is critical as you expand your knowledge and build your skill sets.Communication – Create effective verbal and written communications in and across project teams. You must be:Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program majoring in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Electro-Mechanical EngineeringMinimum 3.0 GPAWilling and able to work on-site at our  location.Applicants MUST be US Citizens or Green Card Holders due to Carpenter’s government contracts.Candidates should have proficiency in Microsoft Office as well as working knowledge of CAD systems (Solidworks, AutoCAD)Ideal candidates will possess the following characteristics: willingness to work in a heavy machinery environment, able to work in a team environment, able to prioritize tasks, showcases excellent problem solving skills, effective communicator and self-motivated.Pay RangeHourly rates are based on: 1 – Program of study; 2 – Degree type (i.e., Bachelor’s); 3 – Progression in degree (i.e., 1st year, 2nd year, etc.). The range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00 per hour.Commuting/Housing Assistance (If Eligible) Interns who must commute to work from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $2,400 (less applicable taxes) as excessive commute allowance. Interns who choose to temporarily relocate from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (moving over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $4,800 (less applicable taxes) as a housing allowance.
