OVERVIEW Athens Land Trust has an opening for an exciting and important position – Young Urban Farmers Program Coordinator. To that end, we are looking for an educator who is interested in being a positive role model for high school students and engaging them in sustainable urban agriculture, entrepreneurship, food systems, sustainability and the culinary arts. The ideal candidate will be flexible, self-directed and creative, with experience working with teens in an after-school setting. Qualities: ● A passion for and knowledge of sustainable agriculture, local food systems and community development ● A strong desire to work with and inspire high school students ● Strong computer, organizational and time management skills ● Excellent communication skills ● Experience working with diverse audiences ● Willing/able to work outside in all kinds of weather ● Able to lift up to 50 lbs ● The ability to organize and lead lessons and discussions about sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship, nutrition and food/social justice ● The ability to lead students in a variety of occupational & educational activities ● Flexibility to work and attend occasional off-hours events and student field trips ● A passion for community involvement and outreach JOB RESPONSIBILITIES The main component of the Young Urban Farmers (YUF) program is education in sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship, cooking/nutrition and food justice. During each semester, each week will be spent tending to the Williams Farm agriculture production, teaching entrepreneurship curriculum, or working on business development. On recurring Saturdays (2x per month), the YUF will set up, run and break down their booth at The Marigold Market to operate their shared booth where they will sell the produce they grow at Williams Farm and they can sell the products which they make through their micro-enterprise. Through these work sessions, students will learn about and put into use the basic practices of entrepreneurship, sustainable agriculture, nutrition and food justice. Work sessions both at the farm and at the market will help instill in students the value of teamwork and effective communication and help them to develop leadership skills and self-confidence. The YUF Coordinator will work 4 hours per week with the Farm Manager on Williams Farm. This will take place Tuesday and Thursday mornings for 2 hours per day. This will allow the YUF Coordinator and the Farm Manager to maintain an ongoing understanding of what projects are currently a priority, this way the YUF Coordinator can plan appropriate activities for YUF work days at the farm which help overall productivity at the farm and simultaneously makes the YUF garden plots productive. YUF produce will be sold at local markets. At other times, YUF produce may be included in the CCSD Food Distribution. The YUF Coordinator will play a key role in achieving the above goals. Specific duties will include: ● Generally this position will work a Tuesday through Saturday schedule. ● Leading work and educational sessions at the Williams Farm, or other community gardens and sites as needed. ● Lead students in assisting with set up, running and break-down of seasonal Saturday Marigold Market, and when not at a market leading Williams Farm work-days. ● Coordinating with the Community Agriculture Director and Farm Manager to determine garden & market tasks. ● Leading high school students with basic farm tasks: weeding, watering, planting, etc. ● Adapting, creating and leading students in sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship, food justice and nutrition curriculum and lessons. ● Leading and assisting students in developing a business plan and creating their own small-business products which they will sell at the Marigold Market, and other local markets. ● Modeling & engaging students in positive conversation, team-building & effective conflict resolution. ● Provide structure, evaluations & accountability to build soft-skills, preparing YUF for the workforce. ● Attending ALT staff and Community Agriculture program meetings. ● Assisting with gathering photos, narrative, and other content for the Development and Communication Department to promote the YUF. ● Working directly with the Finance Director and Strategic Partnerships Director to ensure administrative efficiency with payroll, record keeping and curriculum planning. ● Connecting and coordinating with community guest speakers to speak with students on topics of entrepreneurship, agriculture and social/food justice. ● Working with the other youth program coordinators and ALT staff to plan youth program collaboration and youth program day retreats, as well as YUF community events and field-trips. ● As this work will change depending on funding sources, deliverables and desired outcomes responsibilities may be adjusted in order to meet program goals. Additional Requirements Applicable to All ALT Employees ● Maintain regular office hours to answer email and phone inquiries, contribute to emerging projects, and coordinate with fellow staff, etc. ● Contribute to quarterly newsletters, monthly and annual reports, brochures and other educational materials as related to program(s) of primary responsibility as well as organization ● Attend weekly staff meetings and prepare detailed timesheets ● Be part of a team—provide support for all staff members in their respective duties COMPENSATION This is a full-time position.
