Position Overview:
Sigma Inc. is seeking a detail-oriented Animal Research Technician for a 12-month contract position in Athens, GA . In this role, you’ll play a key part in ensuring high standards of animal care, regulatory compliance, and support for pre-clinical research studies. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a Biosafety Level 1 and 2 animal research lab , with the potential to convert to a permanent full-time role .
Key Responsibilities:
•
Perform daily animal husbandry duties including feeding, watering, enrichment, and health monitoring.
•
Maintain regulatory compliance per the Animal Welfare Act , NIH Guide , AAALAC accreditation , and internal SOPs.
•
Conduct routine health checks , record abnormalities, and administer basic animal treatments under supervision.
•
Assist with scientific procedures , clinical observations, and experimental treatments according to protocol.
•
Document care activities, health data, protocol-driven requirements, and USDA-mandated reports.
•
Support equipment sanitation , facility maintenance, and biosecurity efforts including water/feed sanitation and sample collection.
•
Aid in sample collection (blood, swabs, tissues) for pre/post-mortem clinical R&D studies.
•
Restrain animals for procedures and assist in sedation or euthanasia under veterinary direction.
•
Mentor junior staff and serve on site-specific committees as assigned.
Qualifications:
•
High School Diploma or GED required.
•
Experience in animal care, agriculture, veterinary tech, or lab animal research strongly preferred.
•
Ability to work in extreme environmental conditions (hot, cold, humid, loud).
•
Must be able to lift up to 70 lbs occasionally and 50 lbs frequently .
•
Comfortable working with livestock and in proximity to animal allergens or dust.
•
Ability to maintain composure, follow protocol precisely, and manage detailed documentation.
•
Must possess strong communication, observational, and team collaboration skills .
•
Willingness to work with animals during ante-mortem and post-mortem procedures .
