Description
The Technician Pharmacy Oncology performs medication preparation, distribution, and dispensing tasks under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist. The Technician Pharmacy Oncology is competent to handle hazardous medications (cancer chemotherapy)and prepare hazardous compounds (cancer chemotherapy) for intravenous administration. The Technician Pharmacy Oncology is knowledgeable of the requirements for and operates within a hazardous drug compounding laboratory.

Responsibilities
Knowledgeable of generic and trade names of medication. Knows dosage forms and drug strengths. Stocks medication and accurately selects medication for distributing and dispensing. Utilizes information systems for creating medical records, creating medication orders, creating medication labels, maintaining a drug inventory, dispensing prescriptions, and billing patients. Utilizes drug distribution systems. Utilizes reports to accurately restock automated dispensing cabinets. Accurately prepares medication for dispensing. Troubleshoots interruptions in service. Compounds non-hazardous pharmaceuticals and parenteral solutions in a positive pressure environment using horizontal laminar airflow technology. Uses aseptic technique. Uses a laminar air flow hood, compounding aseptic isolator, or clean room as required. Follows USP standards that apply to non-hazardous materials. Compounds hazardous pharmaceuticals (cancer chemotherapy) and parenteral solutions in a negative pressure environment using vertical airflow technology. Uses appropriate aseptic techniques that protect the compound as well as the operator. Follows USP standards that apply to hazardous materials. Replenishes infiltration box and emergency kits. Inspects and maintains drug storage locations. Knowledgeable of drug storage requirements. Appropriately responds to temperature alarms. Reports medication errors and controlled substance losses. Procures drugs and supplies. Reviews pending treatment orders and orders medication from primary wholesaler. Receives orders, verifies bar codes, and stocks in dispensing system. Stocks controlled substances using the electronic narcotic inventory and dispensing system. Dispenses pharmaceuticals, verifies insurance coverage, obtains prior authorizations, and explains billing to patients.  
Qualifications
Required : High school diplomaRequired Experience : Two years experience as a pharmacy technician with experience compounding pharmaceutical preparations for intravenous administration required.Preferred Experience : One year of experience compounding hazardous pharmaceuticals (cancer chemotherapy) preferred.Required Certification & Licensures: Virginia State Board of Pharmacy registration required. Pharmacy Technician Certification Board certification required.
