Under the supervision of the Property/ Evidence Manager, this position handles sensitive information and is responsible for the care, custody and control of all property and evidence received by the Sarasota Sheriff’s Office. Performs responsible accurate work related to the Property and Evidence function. This is a specialized, highly responsible position, storing and maintaining accountability of all property collected for holding by the agency. Duties include, security over, storage of, and transport of evidence and illegal substance such as firearms, narcotics, cash, jewelry and biohazardous materials. The employee performs routine clerical work involving a high level of confidentiality. Receives, stores, releases, and maintains the security of a wide variety of property and evidence items submitted by deputies and crime scene technicians for accuracy and integrity. Logs and establishes and/or assigns storage location for property and evidence to ensure integrity and chain-of-custody. Processes and stores incoming, returned, and outgoing property. Requires occasional on-call work during evening and weekend hours. *The member will spend at least 65 percent of time performing duties that involve the collection, examination, preservation, documentation, preparation, or analysis of human tissues or fluids or physical evidence having potential biological, chemical or radiological hazard or contamination, or use chemicals, processes, or materials that may have carcinogenic or health-damaging properties in the analysis of such evidence. General Description of Duties Responds to requests for information from law enforcement officers, citizens and other agencies. Requests may be in-person, telephone or electronic means. Requests include but are not limited to discovery and public records requests which require copying electronic and other forms of evidence. Assists in the proper storage of and preparation for the disposal and destruction of controlled substances, hazardous or contraband substances, and items which include weapons, drugs and related paraphernalia, chemicals, bio-hazard and unknown materials and substances in accordance with Florida Statutes. Enters and updates information in manual and computerized records and files; operates a computer and inventory devices. Performs searches through various criminal justice databases; interprets state statutes, federal laws and statute of limitations; and verifies case dispositions. Complete assignment as directed; Maintain work areas; Knowledge of General Orders; Maintain chain-of-custody of evidence/property; Notify owners and release property; Take custody of evidence/property; Place evidence in appropriate bins; Update evidence tracking system; File property receipts; Process requests for laboratory drug tests; Research cases for evidence/property disposition; Document evidence disposal action; Maintain evidence room sign in log; Retrieve evidence/property from offsite locations; Run NCIC checks on evidence/property; Send property to nonprofit/ tax exempt organizations; Photograph evidence/property; Secure weapons submitted as evidence/property; Copy CD/DVD/USB/video/audio tapes; Release evidence for court; Process requests for evidence viewing; Provide public assistance via the telephone; Testify at trials, hearings, grand juries or depositions; Inform supervisors of events and activities in progress; and Liaison with inter/intra agency personnel.
