Description: Job Summary This is a position within the Public Works Department with a wide variety of duties pertaining to the maintenance of roads, streets, storm sewers, bridges and drainage structures within Boone County. A Public Services Laborer is responsible for performing manual tasks assigned by a Public Services Road Crew Leader. Major Essential Duties Assist Public Services Road Crew Leader with general maintenance of County right-of-ways, roads and storm sewer systems including on the job training as needed Assist with the service and maintenance of equipment and tools used by Public Services Road Crews Operate vehicles, trucks and equipment as needed for construction work, street maintenance, and hauling of materials Assist the Public Services Crew Leader to ensure Public Works is OSHA compliant On call 24/7 to assist Boone County Dispatch with emergencies Minor Essential Duties Assist with the Department’s snow removal operations Perform other duties as assigned . Supervisory Responsibilities As assigned Relationships The Public Services Laborer I performs duties within the Public Works Department, under the direct supervision of the Public Services Manager, Road Crew Leader Requirements: Qualifications Education and/or Experience Graduate of a standard high school, vocational school or the equivalency, supplemented by experience or training which provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to perform required duties in the Public Services Division Language Skills Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals Reasoning Skills Solve practical problems Interpret some technical and instructional material Make decisions which serve the county’s best interest and follows the missions and objectives of the Public Works Department Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Kentucky driver’s license Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Kentucky Class A commercial driver’s license or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date. Must possess or obtain OSHA 10 certification within the first 6 months Must possess or obtain Work Zone Flagger certification within the first 6 months Must possess or obtain CPR and Bloodborne Pathogens training within the first 6 months Other Knowledge and/or Skills Ability to work as a member of a Public Services Road Crew performing such tasks as breaking out damaged street/roadway sections, curb and gutters; ability to pour, shovel, tamp/smooth asphalt and concrete in order to make repairs Ability to work with other departments, county and other agency personnel Ability to work under general supervision Basic computer skills with ability to access programs such as but not limited to Microsoft Office products Physical Demands While performing job duties, the employee could reasonably be expected to: Regularly (over 2/3 of regular working day) Stand or walk Talk or hear Lift and/or move up to 60 pounds Operate a motor vehicle Occasionally (under 1/3 of regular working day) Sit Reach with hands and arms Use hands to type, handle papers, tools etc Vision requirements include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus Work Environment The work environments described in the preceding paragraphs represent those encountered while performing the essential job functions.
