Performs intermediate professional work planning, organizing and coordinating athletic programs. Plans, organizes, and supervises athletic events; recruits and supervises coaching staff and game officials; maintains records and files; prepares reports. Does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Supervision is exercised over volunteers, coaches, game officials and seasonal staff. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Plans, organizes and directs a variety of indoor and outdoor athletic events and team sports for all age groups. Resolves problems and disputes among participants and officials. Ensures proper use of equipment and facilities. Recruits, trains and assigns coaches, scorekeepers, clock keepers and other part-time and volunteer personnel. Maintains and administers background checks on all volunteer personnel. Checks on programs and ensures compliance with established policies and procedures. Ensures pay sheets of officials, site supervisors and other part-time personnel are tracked and correctly reported. Inventories athletic equipment and ensures proper maintenance and storage. Prepares and revises league rules and regulations in conjunction with association supervisors; maintains contact with association supervisors, coaches and participants. Purchases equipment and supplies for athletic programs. Coordinates the use of athletic fields and gymnasiums at various sites; coordinates with the Bedford County School office when appropriate. Prepares and submits budget recommendations for the allocation of personnel, equipment and supplies of athletic programs. Performs related tasks as required. Accomplishes all tasks as appropriately assigned or requested by management. Participates in employee meetings and training as needed. Meets attendance requirements and maintains the highest level of dependability. Consistently demonstrates ability to respond to changing situations in a flexible manner in order to meet current needs, and reprioritizes work as necessary. Qualifications Education / Experience Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation or leisure services or related field. Demonstrated experience in community or group recreation activities directly pertaining to youth and adult athletics. Two years of stable work history preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge of sports such as baseball, tennis, softball, volleyball, football and basketball with basic knowledge of other sports; familiarity with Dixie Baseball and Softball, VHSL and NFHS rules and regulations; general knowledge of modern principles and practices of recreation and physical education; general knowledge of athletic field and facility maintenance practices; familiarity with League Administration and Gametime or similar scheduling software. Ability to understand oral and written directions; comprehensive knowledge of standard office practices, procedures, and equipment. Ability to perform light maintenance on equipment. Highly organized with ability to multi-task. Ability to handle a high volume of work and varying assignments with accuracy and attention to detail. Ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondence. Proficiency in business English and spelling. Proficiency in MS Office applications with ability communicate by email, compose Word documents / Excel spreadsheets / Publisher / Web maintenance, enter database information, create presentations, download forms, and preserve / backup important data accurately at a reasonable rate of speed. Mathematical comprehension of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to open/close cash register and count money. Ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to work cooperatively in a diverse professional team and / or independently. Ability to establish / maintain effective working relationships with employees, community officials, associates, vendors, volunteer groups, program participants, and the general public. Strong quality and service minded. Certifications / Licenses Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license, proof of insurance required to drive on county business, and acceptable driving record. Parks and recreation certifications such as NRPA and VRPS credentials are preferred.
