A+S is seeking a motivated and technically proficient Sustainability Specialist / Engineer to join the Commissioning and Sustainability Services (CSS) team in our Columbia, Maryland location.  CSS team members enjoy a mix of office and jobsite activities.  The successful applicant isn't expected to know everything about energy engineering and commissioning but will need to be coachable and eager to learn. Salary is $90K - $105K depending on qualifications and experience.
The Sustainability Specialist / Engineer will support building performance projects through all phases of design, construction, and operations.  This role includes field-based commissioning activities along with analytical energy engineering services to ensure that building systems are designed, installed, and operating efficiently and in alignment with project goals, energy codes, and sustainability standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct energy audits (ASHRAE Level I & II), site assessments, and data collection to identify energy and cost-saving opportunities.
• Model building performance using energy simulation software (e.g., eQUEST, TRACE 3D Plus, EnergyPlus).
• Analyze utility data, calculate energy savings, and support project qualification for programs such as LEED, Energy Star, and local benchmarking ordinances.
• Assist with the design and evaluation of energy conservation measures (ECMs), including life cycle cost and ROI analysis.
• Support grant, incentive, and rebate applications for energy efficiency projects.
Additional Commissioning Responsibilities:
• Perform commissioning services for HVAC, lighting, domestic hot water, and building automation systems across various project types (new construction, retro-commissioning, ongoing commissioning).
• Review design documents, submittals, and control sequences for compliance with owner's project requirements and best practices.
• Develop and execute functional performance test procedures and system verification checklists.
• Prepare commissioning plans, field observation reports, issues logs, and final commissioning reports.
• Coordinate with contractors, designers, and owners to resolve deficiencies and track corrective actions.
Requirements
Required:
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or related field.
• 3-6 years of experience in building commissioning, energy auditing, or MEP system design.
• Working knowledge of HVAC systems, controls, and energy efficiency strategies.
• Familiarity with commissioning standards (ASHRAE Guideline 0, 1.1, LEED Cx credits).
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and at least one energy modeling or building analytics tool.
Preferred:
• EIT or PE license (or working toward)
• CEM, EBCP, CCP, or BCxA certification
• Experience with LEED commissioning or Energy Star benchmarking
• Field experience with TAB, controls testing, or BAS diagnostics
