Our municipal client is hiring for an experienced Planner to join the team based in Sarasota, FL. Known for its beautiful beaches, diverse neighborhoods, lively cultural scene, sunny and warm weather and fantastic quality of life! Relocation assistance is available up to $2,000/year.
Job Summary/Company :
This position involves advanced professional work in park planning, community outreach, park design, development, and policy initiatives. The role includes coordinating strategic park planning efforts, capital improvement projects, and associated activities. The incumbent will assist in project management, the development of park standards, and ensure the successful execution of park improvement projects in alignment with established policies, guidelines, and regulations.
Responsibilities:
Park Planning and Design (35%)
• Develop conceptual park and preserve site plans based on public input, staff feedback, and analysis of existing conditions.
• Serve as a subject matter expert, providing technical guidance on park design and development.
• Create construction drawings, specifications, and obtain necessary permits for small-scale projects.
• Facilitate the procurement of professional design services for larger projects, ensuring compliance with regulations and policies.
• Coordinate with relevant departments (e.g., Capital Projects, Public Works, Utilities, Transportation) and manage public workshops, community outreach, and technical design oversight.
Project Management (30%)
• Oversee the design, permitting, budgeting, and construction processes, ensuring projects are completed on time, within scope, and on budget.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including project managers, park staff, design professionals, and contractors, to ensure successful project outcomes.
• Conduct quality control inspections and facilitate project transitions from construction to operations and maintenance.
• Ensure alignment with operational and maintenance perspectives across departments.
Long-Range/Strategic Planning (15%)
• Research and create written, graphic, and budget-related documents to support departmental strategic planning efforts.
• Assist in the development of park master plans and updates to the Parks and Recreation Strategic Master Plan.
• Support efforts related to accreditation reviews and the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA).
• Collaborate with the Development Review Coordination team on private development plans and contribute to the county’s comprehensive planning initiatives.
Budget Process (10%)
• Support the development of the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget, refine project scopes, develop budgets, and identify funding sources.
• Review and recommend updates to departmental program spending plans and assist in preparing CIP project detail sheets for Board approval.
Special Projects/Initiatives
• Provide documentation and support for presentations to community stakeholders, including advisory boards and the Commission.
• Collaborate with other departments on park-related initiatives and help train junior planning staff as needed.
Requirements:
Bachelors degree
Landscape architects for design a plus
Experience with parks a bonus
