Job Description ALL SUBMISSIONS WILL BE PROCESSED FOR THE NOVEMBER 2025 ACADEMY SPONSORSHIP CLASS!
The recruit will attend the law enforcement academy to obtain their law enforcement certification.
The deputy will administer the laws of Sarasota County, the State of Florida and of the United States in a fair, impartial and professional manner. The deputy will have duties that consist of, but not limited to patrolling areas, conducting traffic stops, informing suspects of their rights, arresting suspects, mediating domestic disputes, protecting crime scenes until assistance arrives, reviewing BOLOS, pursuing vehicles, preparing reports or affidavits and any other law enforcement duties deemed appropriate.
General Description of Duties Tasks: Complete assignment as directed, maintain work areas, collect/recover latent prints, collect and preserve evidence/property, examine bodies of deceased, investigate/document injury to inmate, monitor/respond dispatch and calls for service, secure crime scene, apprehend suspects, respond to traffic accidents, monitor and report road / traffic conditions and hazards, retrieve and enter information from mobile computer, provide assistance to patrol deputies/detectives/other units, guard persons in custody, Originate new cases, Administer field check to suspected intoxicated drivers, Transport persons (such as injured, threatened, deceased, or lost persons, mental patients, prisoners or suspects, administer first aid/CPR, confront and control or disperse demonstrators, rioters, or crowds, conduct active patrolling of assigned area, conduct traffic stop, search for missing, lost, or runaway juveniles, inform victims of victim's legal rights, counsel and / or separate people involved in domestic dispute, investigate non-police action calls (such as animal calls, rescue calls), conduct traffic crash investigation, conduct dwelling, building, or grounds check (EP), photograph/video tape crime scene/evidence, seize, impound, or confiscate vehicle/watercraft or property, noncustodial and custodial interview of persons such as suspects, victims, witnesses or informants, review Be-on-the-look-out (BOLO), Act or respond to hostage or kidnapper, file complaints with state attorney office, conduct field frisk or pat down search, respond to bomb/explosive threat, pursue vehicles/watercraft, control disorderly or irate persons, testify at trials, hearings, grand juries or depositions, locate/contact property owners, conduct minor investigations, establish identity of suspect/arrestee.

Minimum Requirements Must meet the following requirements:
• Must be a US citizen
• Must be at least 21 years old
• Must have a valid driver license
• Must have a high school diploma
• Must have an associate degree or the equivalent amount of college credits from an accredited institution (60 Credit Hours) OR prior completed military contract service with an honorable discharge. Those who do not possess an associates or the amount of credits (60) must successfully complete the Wonderlic Test ONLY IF the military requirement to be eligible for the position has been met.

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office requires all employees to have either an associates degree, 60 equivalent hours from an accredited college or university or the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test. The Wonderlic Basic Skills Test measures verbal and quantitative skills. Sworn *Law Enforcement and Corrections Deputies must achieve a minimum passing score of Verbal - 267 and Quantitative - 241. Civilians must achieve a minimum passing score of Verbal - 248 and Quantitative - 241.
*Law Enforcement Deputies/Recruits must meet additional requirements to qualify.
Local institution to administer the Wonderlic: Suncoast Technical College 941-924-1365 ext. 62322. Fee $40 Hours of Operations: Monday through Thursday 7:30am to 3:00pm Friday 7:30am to 2:00pm. TESTING IS SCHEDULED BY APPOINTMENT ONLY.
