This is a position specific recruitment for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Services. Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this position is to conduct water quality surveys for the Water Quality Monitoring Program to assess the health of Maryland waters. The Water Quality Monitoring Program is responsible for the collection and assessment of water quality data for the Chesapeake Bay (Mainstem, Bay Tributary & Enhanced Tributary), Non-tidal Network, Core/Trend, Coastal Bays, Water Quality Mapping (Dataflow) and Continuous Monitoring Programs. These surveys collect monthly water quality data year-round from over 200 stations statewide. This position may require working long and flexible hours including on-call weekend duty supporting a two-person sampling team assigned to collect storm loading data at critical freshwater stations that send sediment and nutrients to Chesapeake Bay. Fieldwork is conducted year-round from boats, piers, bridges with high-speed traffic, and within streams. A valid driver’s license and the ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. is required to complete field duties. Office duties include cleaning, maintenance and calibration of sampling equipment, preparation of sampling supplies and delivery of samples to the laboratory. These programs are administered by the Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Service whose mission is to understand tidal and non-tidal aquatic ecosystems and trends of these ecosystems; to evaluate the effectiveness of restoration, enhancement, and protection activities for these ecosystems and to interpret scientific and economic data on issues related to the natural resources and environment of Maryland. The Department of Natural Resources, Resource Assessment Service is responsible for major components of these plans including the collection and interpretation of water quality data that are used to provide recommendations on issues related to management of resources in Maryland’s Chesapeake and Coastal Bays.
POSITION DUTIES
The Department of Natural Resources, Monitoring and Non-Tidal Assessment Division (MANTA) is currently accepting applications for a Long-Term Contractual, full time, Natural Resources Biologist I position. This position will be responsible for collecting water quality data throughout the State of Maryland. Sampling will be conducted from boats, bridges, piers and within streams. Office duties include cleaning, maintenance and calibration of sampling equipment, preparation of sampling supplies and delivery of samples to the laboratory.
Candidates must be willing to work long and flexible hours, including on-call duty for storm sampling on weekends. Candidates must be comfortable working year-round aboard boats, from bridges with high-speed traffic and in streams under various weather conditions. Candidates must have a valid Driver’s License and be able to lift and carry equipment up to 50 lbs. This position may require carrying heavy equipment over rough and uneven terrain.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Four years of professional experience conducting research and analysis in the fields of biology, biochemistry, environmental science, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management or zoology.
Notes:
1. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology or physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the wildlife biology field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with any type of field sampling
• Ability to adhere to sampling protocols and to accurately record data
• Ability to work independently and with others to efficiently complete assigned tasks
• Familiarity with water quality instrumentation
• Possession of MD Safe Boating License or equivalent
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.

BENEFITS
Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits.
Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
