Job Title: Network Wiring Engineer
Reports To: Network Services Manager
Job Summary:
The Network Wiring Engineer is responsible for the design, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the physical network infrastructure, ensuring a reliable and efficient network connectivity. This role requires in-depth knowledge of various cabling types (Cat5e, Cat6, fiber optics) and their associated components. They will play a crucial role in maintaining network performance and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Cabling Installation & Management:
• Install, terminate, test, and certify copper transport systems, including Cat5e and Cat6 cables, adhering to industry standards and best practices.
• Pull, route, and terminate fiber optic cables (single-mode and multi-mode) with various connector types (SC, LC, ST, MTP).
• Dress and route cables into IT closets, modular furniture, and other work area outlets.
• Implement cable management techniques to ensure a clean and organized cabling infrastructure.
• Testing & Troubleshooting:
• Utilize network test equipment, such as cable testers (copper and fiber) and network analyzers, to verify connectivity and identify issues.
• Troubleshoot and resolve problems related to network cabling infrastructure, including identifying cable faults and signal issues.
• Documentation & Standards:
• Maintain accurate records of all work performed, including cable runs, installations, and troubleshooting steps.
• Adhere to relevant industry standards, such as BICSI, EIA, TIA, and NEC standards.
• Assist in the development of network diagrams and documentation.
• Layer 1 Expertise:
• Demonstrate a solid understanding of the OSI model, particularly the Physical Layer (Layer 1), and its role in network connectivity.
• Possess knowledge of physical and logical network devices, including hubs, switches, routers, and firewalls.
• Collaborate with team leads and other IT personnel to ensure successful project implementation.
Required Qualifications:
• Proven experience in network cabling, including Cat5e, Cat6, and fiber optic cable installation, termination, and testing.
• Familiarity with patch panels, keystone jacks, and related cabling infrastructure components.
• Understanding of the OSI model, with a focus on Layer 1 concepts and their practical application.
• Experience with network test equipment and troubleshooting techniques.
• Knowledge of relevant industry standards (BICSI, EIA, TIA, NEC).
• Ability to read and follow blueprints and technical diagrams.
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in the design of network cabling infrastructure.
• Experience with fusion splicing of fiber optic cables.
• Knowledge of network security practices.
Employee must be able to participate in the Baltimore City Public Schools background check process.
Candidate must be a US citizen or Green card holder.
This is a temporary position. The duration is 12 months with possible extensions after that.
Salary Range: $24.50-$33.50 an hour, subject to experience.
