Montgomery County Department of Recreation is a nationally recognized and award-winning agency with a mission to provide high quality, diverse, and accessible community-based programs, activities, and services that serve the recreation and leisure needs of the Montgomery County community. The department manages 39 facilities including recreation centers, senior centers, and indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and provides thousands of programs such as out-of-school activities, aquatics, classes, youth and adult sports programs and leagues, senior programs, and therapeutic recreation.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Montgomery County Department of Recreation is seeking a highly motivated and experienced full-time Recreation Supervisor to join our dynamic Youth Development Team . We’re looking for a leader whose expertise, innovation, and passion for youth development are reflected in the quality and reach of the programs and services they deliver. The Recreation Supervisor will provide day-to-day leadership and operational oversight for a broad portfolio of programs that engage and inspire a diverse population of young people—from school-age children through late adolescence. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated ability to create inclusive, responsive, and dynamic environments; understand the role of recreation in addressing community needs and advancing social equity; and lead efforts that align with the Department’s mission to ensure high-quality, accessible recreational opportunities for all.
What You'll Be Doing As a key member of the Department’s leadership team and under the direction of the Youth Development Manager, the Recreation Supervisor will:
• Lead planning and implementation of team and department priorities focused on serving Montgomery County’s diverse youth population.
• Oversee the design, promotion, and delivery of youth-focused programs such as after-school activities, sports leagues, workforce and professional development initiatives, experiential learning programs, and special events.
• Supervise, coach, and mentor career staff, seasonal employees, and volunteers to ensure effective service delivery and professional growth.
• Foster connections with underrepresented communities and ensure that programming is culturally responsive and equitable.
• Conduct market research and stay current with emerging trends to develop forward-thinking, relevant program offerings.
• Collaborate with County agencies, public schools, nonprofits, and other community stakeholders to deliver coordinated services and strong community impact.
• Manage program budgets, contracts, timekeeping, expenditures, performance data, and other operational functions.
• Provide excellent customer service and represent the Department at meetings, events, and collaborative initiatives.
• Develop performance standards and clearly communicate expectations, policies, and program goals to staff.
• Ensure safety, quality, and accountability across all program areas.
Key Responsibilities: • Develop and manage a diverse range of youth programs and services that promote personal development and social connection.
• Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate a professional and seasonal workforce.
• Monitor program performance and use data to assess impact and inform decision-making.
• Promote equity by identifying and removing barriers to access, especially for underserved communities.
• Lead marketing and outreach efforts to increase visibility and engagement.
• Serve as a Departmental leader, upholding high standards of professionalism, collaboration, and accountability.

Important things to Know: • This position will require work beyond a standard 40-hour week , including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on occasion, in outdoor or extreme weather conditions.
• The selected candidate will be required to complete a background investigation and medical history review prior to appointment.
• Recreation Supervisors must be available to respond to emergency situations during both regular and non-working hours and are considered “ Essential ” employees during emergencies or periods of liberal leave.
• This position may require onsite facility management responsibilities and will involve travel to various program locations throughout the County.
• To ensure compliance with laws and to support a positive work culture, all required mandatory trainings must be completed within 3 to 6 months of hire, or as specified.
Minimum Qualifications Experience : Four (4) years of related professional experience in the recreational field.
Education : Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree.
Substitution : An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
Preferred Criteria, Interview Preferences • Experience applying theories, principles, and practices common in positive youth development to plan, develop and implement recreation activities, programs, leagues and large-scale events for young people from childhood through late adolescence as well as youth volunteer and workforce development program.
• Experience supervising, training and evaluating subordinate staff and/or volunteers, establish clear and concise work assignments, performance measures and provide feedback.?
• Experience evaluating and conducting program analysis for programs, activities and events that result in actionable recommendations and program adjustment.
• Experience developing and managing program or activity budgets to support the Department’s priorities and ensure best use of Department resources.
• Experience providing professional written and oral communications such as drafting memos, preparing reports, and delivering presentations.
• Experience working in Microsoft Office 365, VSI Recreation Registration/Activities Management software, Oracle and/or similar relational database system
