Description Responsible for supervisory and skilled mechanical work in directing the operations of a fleet maintenance providing repair and maintenance services for automobiles, trucks, and heavy construction equipment. Work is performed under the general direction of the Shop Supervisor, and results are reviewed through report and by observation of effective working condition of the equipment repaired. This is a working supervisory position.
Essential Job Functions • Diagnosis problem with equipment and/or their sub-systems, including electrical, hydraulic, engine, mechanical, drive train, brake and/or other specialized systems in order to determine the nature/extent of the repair needed.
• Participates in, supervises, coordinate and performed actual work in the activities of the fleet maintenance shop.
• Functions as lead mechanic in the general and motor overhaul and repair work on automobiles, light and heavy truck/equipment.
• Confers with departments to obtain description of vehicle problems, and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements.
• Examines vehicles to determine extend of damage or malfunction.
• Estimate the time/parts needed, and/or provide information regarding the cost effectiveness of repair vs replacement.
• Makes general and detailed assignments to mechanics and reviews their work for completeness and accuracy.
• Reviews specifications and makes recommendations for parts and supplies.
• Receives request for parts and supplies and contacts vendors to place orders as required.
• Extends the safe operating life of the equipment, maintain warranty, ensures equipment operates safety, and minimize repair costs.
• Obtains needed parts in the order to facilitate, maintaining/repairing equipment, maintain and inventory of frequently used parts and to minimize cost.
• Updates basic code groups and depreciation rates on all inventories,
• Prepares and completes various forms, reports, performance appraisals, accident reports and daily activity logs.
• Instructs operators and other staff regarding safe and appropriate procedures for a variety of equipment/vehicles in order to facilitate safe/correct operation of this equipment, minimize equipment malfunctions, promote operator maintenance, minimize equipment down time, and facilitate communications of equipment operating problems.
• Responds to complaints and questions related to department activities. Research problem and provides information, formulates and initiates action to correct problem/issue.
• Must possess excellent people skills, patience, poise, tact, attention to detail, customer friendly approach to work, enthusiasm and the ability to make presentation, both verbal and written to directors, managers and staff.
• Must possess considerable knowledge of purchasing methods and distribution procedures.
• Provides direction, training and assistance to employees under his supervision.
• Reports accidents, injuries and other incidents.
• Managed all aspects of software applications for asset management and stock control of durables and consumables.
• Responds to emergencies as required and may be required to work additional days and hours as needed.
• Persons all other duties as assigned.
• Available for work before, during and after natural disasters for service for the public.
• Required to provide own tools to adequately perform the above listed functions.
Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities • Knowledge of the methods, practices, procedures, equipment and materials applicable to the construction, maintenance and repair of the county roads and storm sewer systems and other related work performed by the division.
• Knowledge of the components, parts, operating principles and maintenance needs of equipment.
• Ability to prepare work schedules, assigns, plan out and supervise the work of several work crews sufficient to obtain a good level of efficient production.
• Ability to use survey equipment for line and grade.
• Ability to prepare accurate reports.
• Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
• Ability to lift and carry more than 45 pounds for extended periods of time.
Education and Experience High school diploma or equivalent; two (2) years’ experience in the operation and routine maintenance of three or more piece of construction equipment and public works experience. Supervisory experience preferred but not required. Leadership is mandatory, specifically leadership by example. A positive attitude, strong work ethic, integrity and stability to learn are all essential. Final decision of appointment to this job will be based on applicant's ability to physically operate, drive and perform the illustrated tasks described herein.
Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License, Class “A” or “B” with air brakes and acceptable driving record is required. Will accept preparation of a CDL permit with the ability to obtain a CDL in 180 days. (Certain endorsements may be required such as H, N or X.) Preferred: Maintenance of Traffic – Flagging Safety in the boom truck, hands on training Proper use of a forklift.
