Job Description
Title: Guidance Counselor/Dean of Students
Reports to: Principal
Supervises: N/A
Job Function: Assumes responsibility for helping students resolve problems that
may interfere with them reaching their full potential at school, and
eliminating any barriers to help them achieve the fullest benefits
from programs, services, and offering at school.
Requirements: Masters Degree
Three (3) years of successful teaching experience
Certification in School Counseling
Principal Certification preferred
Performance Responsibilities:
• Responsible for the preparation of the annual guidance plan required by the state.
• Assists in annual evaluation of the guidance program annually for the State Department of Education.
• Works with the faculty regarding instruction and curriculum development.
• Counsels students regarding strengths and weaknesses and helps them to make decisions and choices.
• Leads group guidance sessions.
• Offers personal counseling to students.
• Responsible for administering tests and interpreting the results to students, parents, faculty, and community as appropriate.
• Maintains cumulative record folders containing results of observation, tests, counseling sessions, etc.
• Serves on Admission and Release Committees for special education placement, when possible.
• Responsible for making referrals to school supportive services and community agencies as appropriate.
• Obtains and distributes current information regarding career education.
• Works with teachers and principals regarding student with special attendance and behavioral problems.
• Assists with scheduling as requested by the Principal
• Shares the responsibility for protecting the education, health, and welfare of students.
• Serves as an active member of the school’s discipline committee.
• Counsels with students parents, and teachers regarding student progress, special needs, and preventative and positive approaches to discipline.
• Communicates with parents, staff, community, and governmental agencies on problems/solutions relating to individual and groups of students.
• Maintains regular attendance.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.
