Main Purpose of Job
The main purpose of this full-time Lead Autopsy Assistant position will be to assist the Medical Examiner in the performance of medico-legal autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death.
Job duties include:
• Assigning work to lower-level Autopsy Assistants, training lower-level Autopsy Assistants, and overseeing their work.
• Obtaining photographs in accordance with NAME accreditation and NAME autopsy standards. Required photographs include but are not limited to: an 'as is' of the decedent upon arrival to the office, evidence on or inside the body, tattoo photographs, and an identification photo.
• Operation of full body x-ray and CT Scan equipment to locate projectiles, document injuries, and prepare dental x-rays. Undresses human remains and secures personal effects (clothing, valuables, etc.) in preparation for external examination and photography.
• Assisting with the collection of evidence during the autopsy procedure including certain homicide and suspicious cases.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education :   Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience : Two years of experience embalming or assisting in the performance of autopsies on humans.
Notes :
1. Possession of an Associate degree in mortuary science may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
2. Experience embalming or assisting in the performance of autopsies on humans may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
3. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in Mortician classifications or Mortuary Affairs Specialist or Mortician specialty codes in the Autopsy field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
