Job Summary
Reporting to the Payroll Manager, this position is responsible for accurate and timely payroll processing for all full-time university employees, following established Federal, State, and University policies and regulations. The role involves reconciling complex payroll and deduction registers with corresponding pay and deduction documentation. This position will also handle the analysis and calculation of Virginia Sickness and Disability benefits, Workers’ Compensation, garnishments, and tax liens, ensuring compliance with Federal and State Laws, rules, and regulations. The Payroll Technician collaborates with HR and General Accounting to reconcile payroll transactions across university and state systems. In alignment with the university’s Code of Ethics, this role requires maintaining confidentiality while addressing payroll inquiries from employees and university leadership, whether in person, by mail, phone, or written correspondence. Additional responsibilities include billing employees for overpayments, processing completed payroll transaction adjustments, electronically transmitting files to third-party providers, generating detailed reports and direct pay forms for these providers, assisting with testing the Banner Human Resource module, and maintaining payroll records.
Required Qualifications
• Demonstrated payroll, human resource, fiscal, accounting, or financial management experience.
• Excellent computer skills to include proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.
• Experience performing complex reconciliations.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independently, processing payroll transactions.
• Exceptional customer service, including strong written and oral communication skills.
• Experience performing complex mathematical computations with the ability to identify and resolve problems/issues in a timely manner.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
• Demonstrated experience managing multiple priorities in an extremely fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-driven environment.
• Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and act in an ethical manner at all times.
Additional Considerations
Prior experience working within a state agency and/or in a higher education environment; experience processing payroll transactions; knowledge of VSDP , pre and post-tax deductions and experience processing payroll in the Banner ERP system is preferred.
