Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
This position is responsible for supervising research support activities occurring in the ABEL and Fish Labs. Includes maintenance of research colonies; supervising technicians and students in aquatic animal husbandry and research activities; overseeing chemical inventory, animal use permits and research collection permits from and inspections; budgeting & purchasing for the lab; experimental design, data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation; and coordination of visits from school groups and others to ABEL and the Fish Labs.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies
• Knowledge and experience with aquatic animal husbandry and laboratory management techniques, including biosafety procedures, production, feeding, and basic disease assessment and treatment.
• Familiarity with Standard Operating Procedure development, training and use in laboratory settings.
Physical Demands
• Lift up to 40lbs.
• Work long hours on feet in adverse conditions.

Research Support -
• Coordinate laboratory maintenance concerns with Warnell Staff and Facilities Management office. Shared research equipment registration and maintenance.
• Maintain research equipment and inventory supply.
• Coordinate shared laboratory space and equipment use and requests.
Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities
Aquatic Animal Research -
• Maintain research and demonstration cultures of fishes (e.g., Tilapia and Fat Head Minnows) used in research through coordination with faculty.
• Collaborate with and asist student and faculty researchers on experimental design, animal husbandry, water quality and equipment use, data collection and analysis.
Percentage of time 25 Duties/Responsibilities
Research Administration -
• Maintain records of animal care, equipment calibration, budgets and Standard Operating Procedures for laboratory equipment.
• Reporting and renewal of research permits, IACUC animal use permits.
• Maintain chemical inventory (in Chematix), coordinate and oversee chemical safety and IACUC inspections. Coordinate hazardous waste removal.
Percentage of time 20 Duties/Responsibilities
Supervisory -
• Train and supervise undergraduate and graduate student workers, interns, volunteers and paid technicians in maintenance of living research cultures and laboratory equipment.
• Catalog employee hours, training, sign time sheets and evaluate progress.

Outreach Coordination -
• Collaborate with faculty and school leadership in communication of research projects and general aquatic natural resource science through authoring scientific manuscripts, annual reports, extension documents, academic support and informal tours.
• Coordinate site visits from school groups, prospective students and others.
