This is a temporary position involving various duties that will supplement the student’s major field of study &/or provide experience that is a useful addition to the student’s education & meaningful preparing for future professional employment.
Rate of pay is based upon the student’s academic status (determined by the college or university):
Freshman and Sophomore Students - $19.50 per hour
Junior and Senior Students - $20.00 per hour.
Graduate Students - $24.00 per hour.
This position is overtime eligible based on FLSA Standards.
This position is unclassified per Section 124.11(A)(29).

We are looking for interns in four different areas of Materials Management!
Aggregate Intern
Aggregates are essential components of the concrete, asphalt, and foundation that form our highways. The Aggregate Section is responsible for the Quality Assurance (QA) of aggregate materials used in roadway construction and maintenance across the state. This is achieved by gathering samples from quarries to evaluate their physical and chemical properties, ensuring they meet the appropriate construction and material standards.
Interns would be tasked with assisting in the following duties:
• Assist geologists in collecting various types of Aggregate samples from prequalified quarries and recycled material producers
• Prepare coarse and fine samples for testing by splitting/sieving material into different size fractions
• Perform tests such as LA Abrasion, Micro Deval, Fine Aggregate Angularity, Percent #200 - Wash Test, Sieve Analysis, etc.
• Assist geologists in other testing procedures such as Resistivity, Sand Equivalency, Deleterious, Sodium Sulfate Soundness, and Specific Gravity
• Other miscellaneous duties as assigned
Asphalt Intern
The AASHTO accredited Asphalt Materials Section is divided into Asphalt Mix and Asphalt Binder areas. This section performs routine and special testing in support of Districts and ODOT project contract administration, supplier certification, material investigations for the asphalt QC/QA program. Through external and internal research projects, works on the implementation of new specifications and technology. The section reviews and approves asphalt mix designs. This section works with material suppliers and contractors in specification development and material and contractor procedure evaluation to further the expectation of quality paving.
• Our every day during the construction season:
• involves test asphalt binders and emulsions that are received from the construction projects and from visits to supplier terminals
• Verifying mix designs by recreating by mixing and compacting specimens, verify moisture susceptibility of the mix, and other verifications as needed to ensure the design meets OH DOT requirements.
• Review of all new mix designs submitted for OH DOT projects to ensure they meet OH DOT Construction & Materials Specifications.
• Benchmarking mix designs for performance to eventually correlate to field performance through balanced mix design.
Cement and Concrete Intern
The Cement and Concrete Section manages the specifications for all ODOT concrete work including precast, prestress structures, and concrete pipe materials. The Cement Laboratory performs testing on cementitious materials for compliance to ASTM standards and ODOT Specifications. The laboratory assists other sections with freeze-thaw testing, and other compressive strength testing within the lab.
The day-to-day operation during the construction season is as follows:
· Assist with testing of materials in the lab.
· Review of specifications and other drawings
· Assist staff with other needs.
· Perform site visits as necessary to precast and prestress facilities
· Visit construction sites during concrete placement
Structural Steel Intern
The Structural Steel section handles multiple materials and performs destructive testing of steel and other materials. We work with Districts on shop drawing submittals, review of QPL materials.
Everyday operations during the construction season are as follows:
· Testing of materials
o Reinforcing Steel
o Nuts, Bolts, Washers
o Anchor Bolts
o Plastic Pipe
o Guardrail and Fence Materials
· Field visits for installation of bridge beams (periodically)
· Assist with Special Investigations
· Assist with QA audits locally
