Duties/Responsibilities
Duties/Responsibilities
Assist with animal care & husbandry of live coastal species exhibits – in coordination with the Tidelands Coordinator and Tidelands Program Specialist: includes care for reptiles, fresh water, and marine aquaria- duties include; feeding, food preparation, basking, and regularly scheduled maintenance/cleaning schedules (daily, weekly, monthly), trouble shoot, report, correct concerns for proper care.
Percentage of time 45 Duties/Responsibilities
Lead environmental education programs for school groups/general public, along with summer camp canoe programs, as well as working with general public in live coastal species exhibit areas.

Assist with general operations. Might include: opening/closing, gift shop operations, marketing, creating interpretive exhibit materials/signage, facility/grounds maintenance, aquaria repair, etc.

This is a 4-H Environmental Educator position at 4-H Tidelands Nature Center, a Georgia 4-H program facility located on Jekyll Island, GA. Primary responsibilities include assisting in delivery of coastal ecology programs for youth and adults. This includes leading summer coastal ecology programs, canoe programs, school group programs, and working with general public in live coastal species exhibit area. Programs and exhibits focus on marine ecosystems and include topics such as marsh & beach ecology, herpetology, invertebrate studies, sea turtles, etc.
Additional responsibilities include assisting with upkeep of live exhibits including reptiles and marine aquaria, and general operations of facilities. Includes weekend work and occasional evenings.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification In Position
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies
Comply with and provide proper care for live coastal species exhibits such as reptile care and marine aquaria life support systems/exhibit maintenance. Includes feeding and carrying out daily/weekly/monthly exhibit cleaning and maintenance schedules, assisting with maintaining permit records. Organize, prioritize and multi-task. Computer skills desirable to assist with general operations.
Physical Demands
This position includes strenuous activity and physical demands such as extended time in the sun while teaching outdoors and or/leading canoe programs, lifting, carrying, etc. Bend, lift and carry canoes/kayaks (55 to 75 pounds) to and from the water, and on and off the rack/trailer. Assisting with grounds work/maintenance. Bend, stoop, squat, lift, carry, and climb, etc. in caring for live animal exhibits. Climb a ladder, along with other physical demands as noted in assisting with facility and/or exhibit maintenance related needs. Driving.
