Ethox Chemicals is looking for an experienced chemical lab technician to join our R&D laboratory team in Greenville, SC.
The Synthesis Lab Technician is responsible for supporting chemical research and development by setting up and monitoring laboratory-scale reactions, preparing and purifying compounds, and documenting experimental results under the direction of a chemist. This role requires strict adherence to safety protocols, accurate data recording, and familiarity with chemical handling and analytical techniques.
Duties and Responsibilities :
• Set up, monitor, and document chemical reactions according to chemist instructions.
• Conduct sample preparation and modify plant formulas as needed.
• Purify synthesis products using techniques such as filtration, liquid-liquid extraction, distillation, and recrystallization.
• Analyze compounds using titration, gas chromatography (GC), HPLC, IR, NMR, MS, and GC-MS.
• Record detailed laboratory observations, results, and yield calculations in lab notebooks and prepare detailed reports.
• Maintain accurate chemical inventory and develop inventory tracking systems.
• Prepare and submit chemical orders to replenish lab supplies.
• Clean and maintain laboratory equipment and glassware using appropriate methods.
• Interpret SOPs, MSDSs, and chemical reference materials to ensure safe storage, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials.
• Classify and store chemicals based on hazard compatibility and container requirements.
• Ensure safe operation of chemical storage and laboratory ventilation systems.
• Collaborate with chemists and team members in an industrial synthesis lab environment.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience :
• Associate’s degree in Applied Science (A.A.S.) or Chemical Technology required.
• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Physics is strongly preferred.
• Strong foundation in applied chemistry and basic mathematics is essential.
• Prior lab experience in organic synthesis, either academic or industrial, is preferred.
• Knowledge of chemical safety practices and regulatory guidelines.
• Familiarity with analytical instrumentation and laboratory techniques.
• Ability to follow detailed procedures, maintain accurate records, and report findings clearly.
• Experience working with hazardous materials and chemical classification systems.
• Proficient computer skills
• Ability to successfully interface with customers, associates, and the community.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong attention to detail, ability to follow complex requests, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.
• Regular and reliable attendance. Required to be on-site.
Physical Requirements :
Physical ability to perform the essential functions of the position, including prolonged periods of standing or sitting, and frequent fine motor tasks such as using laboratory instruments and working on a computer. Requires repetitive hand movements for data entry, equipment operation, and sample handling. Must be able to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist. Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds is required. The role requires working in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to chemical fumes, strong odors, and hazardous materials. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, lab coat, goggles, and, when necessary, a respirator. Visual acuity and manual dexterity are essential for safely performing detailed lab tasks.
