Responsible for performing operational tasks in the maintenance, repair and construction of Dakota County Highways. Work is performed under direct supervision and reviewed and evaluated primarily for work performance results obtained.
Minimum Qualifications
• High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.)
• 2 years of highway maintenance, landscaping, or construction
OR
• An equivalent combination of education and experience
Required License
• Valid Class B CDL driver's license with air brake endorsement
AND
• Within 6 months of hire, incumbent must obtain a Class A CDL driver’s license with combination air brake and tanker endorsements
Duties & Responsibilities
These examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position’s management approved work schedule is required for all positions.
• Operates equipment as needed to maintain the transportation system.
• Conducts bituminous road repair including operating a bituminous paver, gravel road maintenance, culvert cleaning, guardrail repair, clearing brush, assisting with traffic control and performing all other related maintenance activities assigned.
• Determine equipment or tools needed to complete assignments.
• Coordinate activities with other equipment operators during maintenance operations for team efficiency and effectiveness.
• Determine and perform preventive maintenance and daily safety checks on transportation equipment.
• Maintain and clean equipment storage areas.
• Perform labor work as requested including working in other Transportation Department sections.
• May be called back to perform maintenance work, which may occur at any time of the day or night on any day of the week.
• Perform all other duties as assigned by Transportation Maintenance Managers.

• Determine road, weather and traffic conditions in all aspects of transportation job duties.
• Operate all equipment with expertise required to do a safe and efficient job.
• Keep informed of constantly changing weather conditions.
• Must have ability to make an "on the scene" judgment call to perform duties as required.
• Knowledge to inspect equipment for damages, proper equipment settings, and follow and understand MnDOT regulations.
• Must have ability to assess the situation you are called to.
• Experience needed to assess equipment required.
• Perform job with minimal safety risks.
• Identify potential hazards with ability to correct situations.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work requires physical skills and training, and some dexterity, agility, strength, or stamina to accomplish tasks, avoid injury, or reduce adverse effects of moderate physical stress or exertion. Work typically involves: - long periods of standing; and/or - frequent bending, stooping, crouching, reaching, stretching; and/or - walking or running over rough terrain or minor surface obstacles; and/or - climbing in, out, on, or around machinery, vehicles, or vessels; and/or - driving vehicles with manual (i.e., nonautomatic) transmissions over rough terrain.
