About The College/Unit/Department
Part of the Division of Student Affairs, University Housing consists of nearly 2.8 million square feet of facilities and is home to more than 9,000 students. The department employs 220 full-time staff members, 21 graduate assistants and 565 undergraduate student workers. As a self-supporting auxiliary, University Housing operates a $59 million budget derived only from student housing fees and other non-state sources.
In support of its mission to provide comfortable, affordable and secure housing options where the academic success and personal growth of residents are encouraged and supported, University Housing engages staff members in competency-based training and students in curriculum-based engagement focused on community building, interpersonal skills, social awareness and responsibility, and well-being.

Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
Reporting to the Security Systems and Access Control Manager, the Locksmith ensures the security and functionality of residential community locks by accurately cutting keys, changing cores, and maintaining detailed records. Responsibilities include installing, repairing, and maintaining various locks and door hardware, as well as managing key control and responding to emergency lock-picking requests. During the summer, the Locksmith undertakes special projects and work assignments. Participation in the after-hours on-call program and other duties as needed are also required. This position serves 9 residential communities housing approximately 8,000 residents.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And/or Competencies
• Considerable knowledge and skills in the use of tools, equipment and practices used in the locksmith trade.
• Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of a variety of lock and key systems.
• Ability to develop and maintain good professional relationships with staff, residents and various customer groups, and demonstrates supportive involvement in work environment.
• Ability to work as a team member, but also to make effective independent decisions and follow through on assignments.
• Efficiently utilize a variety of computer applications in the completion of assigned tasks, including but not limited to the work order system, Best Keystone 600 system, OneUSG, Microsoft Office Suite, UGA email and UGA employee websites.
• Ability to carry out work assignments with expected degree of independence and efficiency according to standard locksmith practice, with limited callbacks for additional repair.
• Knowledge of workplace rules and guidelines and stay in compliance with UGA policies and procedures.
Physical Demands
• Walk, climb stairs, ladders, scaffolds, may work from a ladder or scaffold.
• Bend at the waist and knees.
• Work with arms and hands overhead for extended periods of time.
• Climb ladders, use hand tools and power tools.
• Lift and move items at least 50 pounds in weight, both assisted and unassisted.
• Visual acuity with hand/eye coordination to accurately align lock hardware.
• Crawl to complete various tasks.
• May occasionally perform work related duties outdoors in hot or cold weather.
• Safely operate a UGA state vehicle as necessary.

Duties/Responsibilities
• Accurately cuts keys, changes core pins and replaces cores in doors. Inputs core change data into the key data base. Maintains appropriate core change paperwork for documentation purposes.
• Installs, repairs, replaces and maintains a variety of locks and associated door hardware in the residential communities within a reasonable time frame.
• Accurately cuts single use, master and sub-master keys and assigns to staff keeping accurate records. Maintains appropriate paperwork relative to key control, for input into the key data base.
• Repairs and installs panic hardware.
• Picks locks as requested in emergency situations.
Percentage of time 75 Duties/Responsibilities
• Performs summer work assignments including implementation of special projects.
• Keeps shop area clean, inventoried, stocked and organized so that supplies can be easily located by other staff members.
• Participates in maintenance after-hours on-call program as required.
• Other duties consistent with the purpose and scope of this position which may be assigned.
