About The College/Unit/Department
UGA is a research-intensive land-grant university, ranked 18th among public universities, and reported over $600 million dollars in research expenditures in the last fiscal year. Research in the Department of Chemistry spans a broad range of established and emerging subdisciplines in the chemical sciences, such as Physical, Organic, Analytical, Inorganic, Chemical Biology, Materials Chemistry, and Chemical Education. The Department of Chemistry is home to 28 full-time tenure track faculty, 12 full-time Lecturers, 7 Academic Professionals, 163 graduate students, and 180 undergraduate students as well as lab and office staff. There are outstanding opportunities for collaborations with faculty across the Franklin College’s physical and life sciences departments, as well as with faculty in the Colleges of Engineering, VetMed, Agriculture, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Medicine, among others. The department maintains core facilities in NMR, Mass Spectrometry, Electron Microscopy, and X-Ray Crystallography. UGA is located in the vibrant city of Athens in the northern Piedmont region of Georgia. Athens is 65 miles east of Atlanta, less than two hours from the Chattahoochee National Forest and southern Appalachian Mountains, and within easy driving distance of the Atlantic coast. Position Summary
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications for a Head of the Department, beginning August 1, 2025. We are broadly interested in scientists who address either fundamental or applied questions in any subdiscipline of chemistry and who are eager to lead our department.
The Head of Department will be an accomplished scientist, with internationally recognized expertise in chemistry. The Head of Chemistry is expected to vigorously contribute to the tripartite teaching, research, and service missions of the University, and be committed to promoting ‘excellence in a teaching/learning environment dedicated to serving a diverse and well-prepared student body’ and to fostering ‘the understanding of and respect for cultural differences necessary for an enlightened and educated citizenry (see link ).’ The Head of Chemistry will report to the Dean of the Franklin College of Arts & Sciences and will oversee academic, personnel, administrative, and budgetary matters in the department.
Additional Requirements
The applicant must possess a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Chemistry, or a related field, and hold the rank of Full Professor at the time of appointment. Candidates considered for the Full Professor rank must have qualifications and academic credentials that are commensurate with the promotion and tenure guidelines at the University of Georgia and must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.
