Definition
The City of Vancouver, Washington is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Childwatch staff, at the newly renovated Marshall Community Center. This position will assist in the supervision of children between the ages of 3 months-12 years in the Childwatch facility. Staff will be asked to provide activities including but not limited to games, coloring, story time, and arts and crafts to create a fun and enriching program for the children. The individual in this part-time position will work a maximum of 1040 total hours in a rolling 12 month period; schedules may vary weekly. This position is morning shift.
Functions
The candidate for this position must be able to:
• Perform all duties in accordance with the City of Vancouver’s Operating Principles;
• Work and act as a team player in all interactions;
• Provide basic customer service skills and effectively respond to basic public inquiries and complaints in a courteous manner;
• Exercise judgment and maintain a high degree of confidentiality;
• Utilize proper safety precautions in all aspects of this job;
• Follow policies and procedures of Parks and Recreation programs/area of assignment;
• Read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance;
• Supervise children between the ages of 3 months and 12 years;
• Ensure a safe and fun environment; and respond quickly and effectively in an emergency situation;
• Utilize skills to promote good working relations with parents, children, and staff;
• Participate and administer arts, games, crafts, story time, etc.;
• Keep accurate attendance records and any other required data;
• Maintain positive, professional relationships between staff, parents, and children at all times;
• Provide a high level of customer service at all times; project and maintain a positive image on behalf of the City of Vancouver with those contacted in the course of work;
• Perform other duties required to accomplish the objectives of the position.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position will have:
• Reading skills.
• Basic knowledge of and experience or recreational and/or educational activities;
• At least six months of recent experience working with children;
• Experience working in a recreation program is desired.
Knowledge Of
• Childwatch management and skills for small groups of children;
• Safety practices;
• Basic office equipment such as a phone, and copier;.
The Ability To
• Successfully pass a criminal background check.
• Successfully pass employment references.
• Work in a team situation with a variety of people, including city and county government personnel.
• Work a flexible schedule;
• Lift and carry some play equipment;
• Keep accurate records;
• Work effectively with others to achieve personal, team, department and citywide goals.
• Demonstrate respect and cooperation in all interactions;
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
• Give high priority to customer service and satisfaction, performing any necessary follow-up.
