Lab Attendant: Gathers industrial and in-plant wastewater samples; monitors flow readings. Prepares and analyzes industrial and in-plant wastewater samples for pH and electrical conductivity (EC); calibrates pH and EC meters; cleans and maintains lab and lab equipment; prepares chemicals, bacteriological media, stains, and standard test solutions; under direct supervision performs miscellaneous analysis activities, such as BOD readings, SS, TDS, coliform, and/or other related analysis. Maintains a variety of records related to wastewater activities and analysis; and compiles and records information onto standardized worksheets and logs. Monitors and compiles information for the issuance of Master Reclamation permits; prepares related reports for submittal to applicable Federal, State, and Local governments. In addition to some of the duties above, the Lab Assistant: Compiles a variety of data and information for required reporting to Local, State, and Federal monitoring agencies for the industrial pretreatment program, the treatment plant, and/or other related issues. Gathers industrial and in-plant wastewater samples; monitors flow readings; prepares and analyzes industrial and in-plant wastewater samples of pH and electrical conductivity; assists in the lab as required. Performs other related duties of a similar nature or level, as required.
Examples of Duties / Knowledge & Skills
Knowledge Of
Laboratory safety principles; mathematical principles; basic biological analysis techniques; principles of organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, basic filing and recordkeeping principles. In addition, the Lab Assistant should have knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and/or Local laws, rules, and regulations.
Skill In
Using computers and related software applications; handling multiple tasks simultaneously; following oral, written, and graphic instructions; operating common laboratory equipment; performing mathematical calculations; determining the validity of analytical results; troubleshooting and resolving problems; performing chemical and biological analysis; skill in keyboarding and using basic office equipment; preparing a variety of reports; communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. In addition, the Lab Assistant should have skill interpreting and applying applicable Federal, State, and/or Local laws, rules, and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications & Requirements
Training and Experience:
For the Lab Attendant, the typical qualifying experience is one year of related lab experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. For the Lab Assistant, the typical qualifying experience is two years of related lab experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. An Associate’s Degree in a science field is desirable.

LICENSE REQUIRED AT TIME OF ENTRY
• Possession of valid and appropriate California driver’s license.
• Typing certificate (received within the past six months) verifying 35 wpm
Lab Assistant
• Possession of valid and appropriate California driver’s license.
• State of California Laboratory Analyst Grade I certification.
• Typing certificate (received within the past six months) verifying 35 wpm.
Salary for Lab Attendant: $2,281 - $2,785/Mo
Salary for Lab Assistant: $2,468 - $3,014/Mo
• Public Employees' Retirement System: The City provides the PERS retirement program, 3% @ 60. The city pays the employees’ 8% share.
• Holidays: Ten specific holidays, plus two floating holidays.
• Vacation: Vacation leave starts at 11 days annually, increasing to 20 days based on time in service.
• Sick Leave: Sick leave accrual of 12 days per year with unlimited accumulation. At retirement, unused
sick leave may be applied toward retirement benefits.
• Medical, Dental, Life Insurance: The City provides the CalPERS health insurance program with up to $529.13 paid for family coverage. Life insurance policy of $20,000 plus an additional $20,000 Accidental Death and Dismemberment. A Basic Life insurance policy of $10,000 is provided for members of the Hanford General Employees Union.
• Tuition Reimbursement: A tuition reimbursement plan is available for work related study up to $500 per year.
