General Description
Unskilled to limited semiskilled work in assisting in the installation, repair, and maintenance of the water and wastewater collection systems. Employees in this class perform a variety of manual laboring tasks in connection with the construction, repair, and maintenance of the water distribution or wastewater collection system.
Essential Job Functions
Assists in the maintenance of water or wastewater treatment plants, grounds, and processing equipment. Maintains water or wastewater treatment plant facility, including custodial services and minor maintenance of plant processing equipment. Assists in installing, repairing, replacing water and sludge processing lines. Locates lines and fittings. Digs holes to uncover underground work and backfills holes when work is completed. Cleans out clogged equipment and pipes. Loads, hauls, rakes and levels sludge. Cleans portable and deep-bed sand filters. Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
Knowledge of methods of repairing water distribution and sewage collection lines. Knowledge of tools, fittings, and cleaning out lines. Ability to drive a truck. Ability to operate line clearing equipment and pumps. Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools. Ability to get along with other employees and the public.
Minimum Requirements
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to lift up to 80 pounds. Ability to frequently bend, climb, stoop, squat, and walk. Ability to communicate effectively using speaking, hearing, writing, and vision skills. Ability to work outside, occasionally under adverse conditions. Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE: Completion of eighth grade. One year of experience in the performance of manual work. A comparable amount of directly related experience may be substituted for the minimum educational requirements.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS: Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
