Department Manager, Mechanical Testing
Overview
Element has an opportunity for a Department Manager (Mechanical Engineering) . In this role you will be a member of the operational leadership team reporting to the Operations Manager or General Manager and perform a variety of leadership responsibilities within the department to insure timely and accurate test results are delivered.
Responsibilities
• Manage high performing, growing team of Mechanical Engineers and Technicians (6 current direct reports, up to 10 by Q3 2025)
• Responsible for revenue generation to meet annual operating plan responsibility for Mechanical and Machine Shop departments
• Quality and Technical responsibility for Mechanical departments preparation and testing methods
• Oversee purchasing selections, drive customer concentricity, and continuous improvement and innovation activities
• Perform preparation of test samples, evaluations, and technical review of incoming orders and outgoing test data for tensile testing (room temperature and elevated), elevated stress rupture, hardness (Rockwell and Brinell), creep testing
• ASTM Testing methods include A370, E8, E83, E1012, B557, E220, E230, E21, E4, E139, E292, E18, E10
Skills / Qualifications
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a leadership role with a diploma or GED, Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred
• Working knowledge of laboratory safety with extensive knowledge of the current suite of testing capabilities
• Ability to read and interpret test specifications, drawings, test plans and/or blueprints
• Understanding of continuous improvement disciplines such as Six Sigma, Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing, 5S, etc. preferred
• Ability to communicate (written and oral) effectively with clients and colleagues with great attention to detail and timing of results
• Proven ability to multi task and work under strict time lines
