Description
Maintenance Workers perform a variety of routine maintenance and construction tasks at County airports' facilities. These tasks are necessary to maintain County property in a manner consistent with its safe and enjoyable use by the public.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
Maintenance Worker I differs from Maintenance Worker II in that the I level is assigned a variety of routine tasks. The Maintenance Worker II class differs from the Maintenance Worker III class in that the III level may act as a limited lead or site supervisor and may instruct or supervise other employees.

• The approximate hourly pay ranges for these classes are:
Maintenance Worker I = $11.20 - $15.66/hour
Maintenance Worker II = $12.71 - $17.06/hour
Maintenance Worker III = $13.62 - $19.10/hour
EDUCATIONAL INCENTIVE: Possible educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of Associate/Bachelor's/Master's degree.
This classification is represented by Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and is eligible for overtime.

Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Builds, repairs and maintains airport facilities, grounds, and equipment; including hangars, the business park, airfield, runways, taxiways, and airfield lighting and signs.
• Performs installation, repair and maintenance of electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. Additional work includes framing, masonry work, roofing, finish woodwork, carpeting, tile and linoleum floor installations, fencing, asphalt and concrete repair, plastering, painting and janitorial services. Incumbents also service and maintain, equipment, small engines and tools.
• Plants, transplants and maintains trees and shrubs; plants flowers and lawns; installs and maintains irrigation systems; fertilizes and applies herbicides, pesticides, etc.; maintains landscaped areas around buildings, airfields, and along roadways.
• Drives light trucks, tractor mowers, riding mowers and operates motorized equipment as required.
• May be required to perform a variety of other duties as assigned, such as making minor adjustments and repairs to tools and equipment.
Typical Qualifications
These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
Minimum Qualifications:
At least one year of experience for Level I, two years of experience for the Level II, and three years of experience for the Level III in general construction, facilities, grounds, and landscape maintenance, and performing duties similar to those described above. Placement will be determined by the experience, skills, and knowledge of the applicant and the needs of the Department.
Special Requirements
Must have the ability to perform strenuous manual labor and maintenance work.
Must possess at the time of appointment, and maintain a valid California driver license.

APPLICATION EVALUATION - qualifying
All applications will be reviewed to determine whether the stated requirements are met. Individuals meeting the stated requirements will be invited to a written examination.
WRITTEN EXAMINATION 100%
A job related written examination will be administered to test candidates knowledge of general arithmetic, mechanical knowledge, and reading comprehension. Candidates must earn a score of 70% or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
Applicants will be subject to a thorough background investigation which may include inquiry into past employment, education, credit, criminal, and driving records.
SUPPLEMENTARY QUESTIONNAIRE
Federal Transportation Security Administration Regulation parts 1540/1542, require that employees who may have unlimited access to airport restricted areas undergo an employment background investigation. The attached Supplementary Questionnaire will be used for such purpose, and must be completed for the last ten years, in addition to the County application. Failure to complete both the application and the questionnaire will result in the application being screened out from further consideration.
